Dennis Williams’s gaze swept coolly across the street, catching the scene unfolding just outside. His eyes narrowed a fraction, lips pressed into a thin line, giving nothing away.
Out on the sidewalk, Camila Davis was just as surprised to see Walter Wilson show up.
“What are you doing here?” she blurted out.
And—was he really carrying that many flowers?
Sure, it was Valentine’s Day, but… who were those for?
For some reason, Camila’s heart skipped an anxious beat.
Walter, meanwhile, looked completely unbothered. “Came to find you, thought we could celebrate—well, not Valentine’s, but, you know, maybe grab some pie or talk business for the summit. But as soon as I got to your building, this little girl tugged on my coat, begged me to buy her flowers. Said her mom’s in the hospital and they need the money…”
He shrugged. “She was shivering in a thin jacket, nose all runny. I couldn’t say no, so I bought the lot. Most of these weren’t even wrapped. I figured you could work your magic upstairs, but you weren’t home. So I ended up hauling them around, dropping petals everywhere!”
As if to prove his point, Walter tried to readjust the armload of roses—only for a few more to tumble to the ground.
He muttered under his breath and scrambled to catch them, but only managed to lose more.
Watching him, Camila couldn’t help it; she burst out laughing. “That’s so you!”
Walter huffed, “Don’t just stand there laughing—help Mr. Williams Jr. pick them up, will you?”
Giggling, Camila crouched to scoop up the fallen roses, and Lillian hurried over to help.
A few minutes later, the flowers were stuffed back into Walter’s arms. Camila gave him a mock-serious look. “Hold on tight this time! No more flower casualties.”
Walter grumbled good-naturedly and finally let his gaze drift, a little too casually, to the bouquet in Camila’s hands. “So… who gave you those? I thought you were just taking Lillian to her therapy session. You’re home late. Don’t tell me the shrink gave you flowers?”
