Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 361

Dennis Williams hadn’t expected her to say that. He couldn’t help but chuckle, shaking his head. “You really think far ahead, don’t you?”

Camila Davis laughed too. “Hey, I’m just being honest! You’ve got so much patience, and you really know how to talk to people. Any kid would be on their best behavior with you around. I bet they all just adore you.”

Dennis smiled. “Thanks for the compliment.”

“No problem.”

They kept chatting as they walked through the rain, weaving between puddles.

It was only then that Camila noticed something was off. At some point, the umbrella had tilted more toward her side, leaving Dennis’s shoulder soaked by the rain.

“Oh my gosh!” Camila gasped, instantly guilty. “Mr. Williams, your shirt’s all wet! Here, let me—move the umbrella back. You already took a shower, you shouldn’t get cold. I haven’t showered yet, so I don’t really care…”

She was so concerned about Dennis that she reached out to adjust the umbrella—and accidentally grabbed his hand.

His fingers, gripping the handle, were long and pale, but warm to the touch—so different from her own cold hands.

In that moment, Susan and Sarah Brown’s teasing words flashed through her mind, and her ears burned.

Camila snatched her hand back, flustered. “Sorry! I didn’t mean to—”

Dennis looked at her, his gaze deep and unreadable. After a beat, he said, “It’s fine, really. No big deal. Besides, we’re almost there. A little rain won’t hurt. Let’s keep going.”

For the rest of the walk, Camila kept her mouth shut, too embarrassed to say much. She sped up, wanting to get back quickly so Mr. Williams wouldn’t catch a cold because of her.

Suddenly, her phone rang.

It was Sarah Brown.

“Camila! You and Lillian really aren’t coming home tonight?” Sarah’s voice was so loud, Camila winced. “I mean, I did say that a stormy night is perfect for you and Mr. Williams to get closer, but I didn’t think you’d actually take my advice! Now I’m starting to think you two really are an item!”

Camila nearly dropped her phone in panic, fumbling to turn the volume down. Dear God, please let Mr. Williams not have heard that…

She snuck a glance at Dennis. He looked straight ahead, as if he hadn’t heard a word.

She let out a sigh of relief and grumbled, “We’re staying at the base tonight. Mr. White asked me to help out with the soldiers. You should just go to bed, Sarah. And by the way, I’m thinking of coming up with a new ‘mute’ pill. Looks like you could use one—remind me to save you a batch…”

Her last words came out with a definite, mock-threatening edge.

Sarah immediately caved. “No, no, Camila, don’t be like that! I promise I’ll keep my mouth shut!”
