Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 363

Camila Davis stood outside the front door, bracing herself. She thought she was ready for this, but hearing those words still stung more than she’d expected.

Most of what she felt was guilt.

She knew she’d hurt him, her old mentor. Everything that happened was her own fault, and if he was angry, he had every right to be.

If he wanted to yell or even throw her out, she wouldn’t argue.

With that in mind, Camila dropped to her knees right there on the porch and called out, “Sir, I’m sorry! Years ago, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have ignored your advice, shouldn’t have doubted your judgment. I was stubborn and paid the price—and I deserved it!

I’m not here expecting you to forgive me. I just want to sincerely apologize.

I broke your trust, hurt you when you did nothing but care for me. That was on me. I was ungrateful and reckless, and I’m truly sorry.

I shouldn’t have changed careers so impulsively. Now I’ve come back, ready to start over. I know I’ll never match your lifetime achievements, but from now on, that’s my goal. I won’t give up so easily ever again!”

When her voice faded, the house was completely silent.

No reply. No footsteps. Her old mentor didn’t even come to the door.

Camila’s heart sank. Was he really refusing to see her?

Her eyes stung with tears, but she told herself she’d earned every bit of this.

He didn’t say a word, so she stayed kneeling, refusing to move.

Half an hour passed before she heard footsteps approaching at last.

She looked up, hope rising, only to feel it sink again when she saw it was Patrick.

Patrick looked at her, still kneeling in the chilly air, and there was both sympathy and exasperation in his voice as he said, “Camila, come on. Don’t do this to yourself—why not head home for today?”

When she realized her mentor wasn’t coming out, Camila shook her head, determined. “I can’t leave. Not until he forgives me. I’ll stay here as long as it takes.”

Patrick knew just how stubborn she could be. He lowered his voice, trying to reason with her. “Look, apologies can come in rounds. You showed how sincere you are today, and I’m sure Mr. Morris noticed. You know how stubborn he is—give it a few tries, he’ll cool off eventually.

For now, listen to me. Get up, okay? If you mess up your knees, he’ll be even more upset.”

Camila realized he had a point. She’d already hurt her mentor—no sense in making things worse.

Besides, Patrick’s words gave her a tiny bit of hope: if her mentor still cared about her well-being, maybe she wasn’t a lost cause after all.

With Patrick’s help, Camila struggled to her feet—her legs numb after so long kneeling. She almost stumbled, but Patrick caught her.
