Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 375

Jordan Smith didn’t say a word.

But if you looked closely, you’d notice his eyes had grown darker, his entire presence icy cold.

At the same table, a CEO who’d been about to raise a glass in Jordan’s direction caught those vibes and awkwardly sat back down. No one wanted to mess with that mood.

The Smith Group, after all, was a big deal in Harrisburg—at least in the world of finance. But in the pharmaceutical industry? They barely made a blip. Even if someone wanted to partner with them, they couldn’t get their foot in the door.

That’s why everyone was a little puzzled. After the Smith Group’s string of public disasters and embarrassing flops, why had Jordan Smith even bothered showing up to this banquet tonight?

What were they planning?

People’s curiosity quickly shifted to the main table. Someone, a sharp-suited exec, leaned over and asked, “Hey, there’s still an empty seat next to Mr. Mark. Anyone know who that’s for?”

At Camila Davis’s table, the same question was being whispered.

“Is there another VIP who hasn’t arrived yet?”

“The dinner’s already started and they’re not here—maybe they’re making a grand entrance?”

“Whoever it is, they must be a pretty big deal!”

Camila Davis herself was curious, so she turned to Walter Wilson. “Any idea who that empty seat is for?”

Walter just shook his head. “Don’t ask me, I honestly have no clue.”

Camila blinked in surprise. “Didn’t you organize this whole thing? Didn’t you check the guest list?”

“Nope,” Walter replied. “Mr. Mark told me to leave one spot open, but he didn’t say who it was for. Hell, he doesn’t even know if the person will show up. So trust me, you’re not the only one wondering.”

Camila glanced back at the empty chair, a nagging sense of déjà vu tugging at her. Hadn’t something like this happened at the last summit? But Mr. Williams had already said he wouldn’t be attending tonight, so it couldn’t be him… right?

She let it go and turned her attention back to her meal.

Later, as the dinner wore on and everyone had eaten their fill of steak and mashed potatoes, people started getting up and making their way to the head table to toast the VIPs.

The area around Mr. Morris grew crowded and lively again.

Walter nudged Camila. “Ready? We should probably head over, too. Wouldn’t want the banquet to end before we say hello.”
