Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 377

No matter how thick-skinned Sandra Taylor usually was, she couldn't just brush off what Walter Wilson had said. Her face went from red to purple, but she didn’t dare blow up at Walter right there in front of everyone.

After all, she knew exactly why she was here tonight: Jordan Smith’s old injury. No matter how Walter tried to embarrass her, she just had to swallow it.

Sandra forced a smile, her lips tight. “Absolutely not, Mr. Morris. I’d never try to pull the wool over your eyes. It’s just—well, Camila’s not with The Smith Group anymore, so I didn’t think to bring her up. She’d already made plans with Mr. Wilson before she left...”

She suddenly slapped a hand over her mouth, as if she’d accidentally let something slip, then scrambled to cover it up. “Oh—I just mean, she’s doing so well for herself now. If I mentioned her, folks might think I was just trying to ride her coattails. That’s all.”

Her act was transparent, but no one was really paying attention to her explanation. All eyes were on Camila Davis, who had been silent the whole time. People started whispering behind their wine glasses and cheese plates.

“What’s Sandra getting at?”

“Is there some kind of hidden drama here?”

“If I remember right, the tabloids said Mr. Smith dumped his wife and kid for some other woman. But now it sounds like Sandra’s saying Camila had something going on with Walter first, and that’s why they split?”

“So the guy everyone called a cheater—turns out he was the one being played?”

Everyone felt like they’d just scored the juiciest gossip of the night.

Camila felt sick to her stomach. She never expected Sandra would try to throw her under the bus, especially here. And it was obvious Sandra was doing this deliberately, right in front of her mentor. If she and her mentor weren’t just teacher and student, Sandra might have actually succeeded in stirring up trouble.

But Sandra wasn’t done.

She turned to Mr. Morris, her voice all earnest. “Mr. Morris, you know how rumors go. By the time they get to you, half of it’s been blown way out of proportion. I know you’re a sharp man—you see through the nonsense. Whenever we’ve reached out, it’s always been sincere, never with hidden motives. I’m sure you can tell.”
