Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 392

Dennis Williams didn’t bat an eye at Mr. Morris’s outburst.

He just replied, cool as ever, “I’ve still got things to take care of. No need to worry about me, I’ve got my own plans.”

That only seemed to rile Mr. Morris up even more. “Plans? What plans could you possibly have? Every time I want to see you, I have to chase you down like a bill collector. If you actually cared, I wouldn’t have to keep twisting your arm. Keep this up, and I’ll send someone after you myself—or maybe I’ll come pay you a visit!”

You could tell Mr. Morris was truly losing his temper; his voice was practically booming through the phone.

Dennis simply pulled his phone away from his ear, waiting for the storm to blow over. Once the yelling died down, he put the phone back and answered in his usual calm, steady tone, “Mr. Morris, like I said, I have my own schedule. You know better than anyone, I hate when people mess with my plans. When it’s time for me to come back, I’ll come back.”

There was no argument, but Dennis’s firm, no-nonsense tone made it clear where he stood.

“You—” Mr. Morris started, but then stopped himself. What was the point? Dennis never listened anyway.

Frustrated, Mr. Morris snapped, “You know what? If you’re not coming back now, then don’t bother coming back at all!” And with that, he hung up.

Dennis stared at his phone for a second, shaking his head with a sigh. He slipped the phone into his pocket and turned to his assistant, Aaron. “Send Mr. Morris a nice gift basket—make sure there’s some of that fancy English breakfast tea he likes. Maybe that’ll calm him down.”

“Sure thing,” Aaron replied, already knowing exactly what would smooth things over with Mr. Morris.

But even as he set about his task, Aaron couldn’t help worrying—what if Mr. Morris really did send someone over? After all, every move they made in Harrisburg was carefully scrubbed from the record. As far as Cabinda—and Mr. Morris—knew, Dennis was just helping some kids with mental health issues over here.

But if someone actually showed up, they’d find out about Ms. Davis for sure. And while nothing was going on—at least for now—everyone knew Dennis had a soft spot for her. Mr. Morris would sniff that out in a second and shut it down before it even started. That would surely spell trouble for Ms. Davis.

As Dennis’s assistant, Aaron knew better than anyone that once Dennis made up his mind, nobody could change it. Not even Mr. Morris. And if Dennis wanted to look out for someone, nothing could get in his way.

Dennis seemed to know exactly how unpredictable Mr. Morris could be. “Keep your eyes open,” he told Aaron. “I don’t want to find out someone’s here after the fact.”
