Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 393

After a busy day at work, Camila Davis clocked out right on time, grabbed her coat, and headed out to pick up her daughter, Lillian, from school.

Just as they’d planned, they made their way to their old family friend’s house that evening.

When they arrived at the cozy, ivy-clad cottage, Mr. Morris and Patrick were already waiting for them—Patrick bustling around the dining table, which was loaded with all kinds of hearty comfort food: roast chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh-baked bread, and a tempting spread of desserts.

Patrick grinned as soon as he saw Camila. “Well, look who finally made it! I swear, Mr. Morris has been watching the front gate all afternoon, just hoping you’d show up.”

Mr. Morris shot Patrick a look over his glasses. “Nonsense. I was just taking a stroll outside. Don’t listen to this fool—I wasn’t waiting around all day.”

“Sure, sure. Whatever you say, sir.” Patrick laughed, not about to argue.

Camila knew her old mentor was just being stubborn. But honestly, being fussed over like this made her feel all warm inside.

Lillian, meanwhile, peeked curiously at the two gentlemen—she’d heard stories about them, but seeing them in person was another thing.

Camila knelt down beside her daughter. “Lillian, this is Mr. Morris—he’s the one who taught Mommy everything she knows about medicine. And this is Patrick. You can just call him Patrick.”

On the way over, Camila had already given Lillian a little pep talk, explaining that tonight, they were going to meet people who cared about her just as much as Grandma and Grandpa did.

Lillian clung shyly to Camila’s sleeve, her baby cheeks rosy with nerves, but she still piped up sweetly, “Hello, Mr. Morris. Hello, Patrick!”

Older folks always had a soft spot for little kids—especially ones as adorable as Lillian, with her big eyes and button nose. Looking at her, Patrick couldn’t help but grin. “Well, aren’t you just a little sweetheart! You look just like your mom did when she was your age.”

He crouched down, fishing a handful of strawberry candies out of his coat pocket. “Lillian, I heard you like strawberry candy, so I brought some just for you. See if you like them.”

Mr. Morris’s eyes widened. “Hey, when did you get those? Why didn’t you tell me you were bringing treats?”

Patrick just winked and waited for Lillian to take a candy.

Lillian looked up at Camila, her big eyes clearly asking for permission.

Camila smiled and ruffled her daughter’s hair. “Patrick brought those especially for you, honey. Go ahead.”
