Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 47

Lillian dumped the contents of the tote bag onto the table all at once, and within seconds, a mountain of gifts piled up in front of her—at least a couple dozen in total.

She was clearly thrilled, her eyes darting from one thing to the next, touching this, squeezing that, totally overwhelmed by the options.

Camila Davis couldn’t help but laugh. “Seriously, did you buy out the whole store?”

Sarah Brown just waved her off. “So what? As long as Lillian’s happy, I’d buy her the whole toy aisle if I could!”

With that, she scooped the little one up for another round of cuddling and kisses, like she just couldn’t get enough.

Camila shook her head, grinning, and picked up the menu. Someone had to order dinner before the whole table was covered in plushies and toy animals.

While they waited, Lillian had already picked out her favorite toys and was busy talking to her new stuffed fox, promising to be its best friend forever.

Sarah stared, a little stunned. “Am I imagining things, or is Lillian… different today?”

She remembered how Lillian used to just stare off into space, barely reacting to anything. Sure, sometimes she’d respond, but most of the time it was like she was in her own little bubble.

But today? Lillian looked… alive. Bright-eyed. Open.

Camila understood Sarah’s confusion. She’d noticed it too—the shift in Lillian’s mood these past few days. And, after some thought, she was pretty sure she’d figured out what sparked it.

“It’s that painting,” Camila said. “Ever since she saw it, something’s changed.”
