Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 61

Jordan Smith could sense the tension in the air and glanced up, his expression cool and unconcerned.

When he saw Camila Davis storming over, he barely reacted. He even took his sweet time undoing the knots on little Daniel Taylor’s shoelaces, giving Sandra’s son a gentle smile and a quick tousle of his hair. It was the kind of tender attention you’d expect from a doting dad.

Only after that did Jordan finally take Daniel’s hand and walk over to Camila and her daughter.

The careful way he looked after Daniel almost made it seem like the boy was his own flesh and blood.

Camila was shaking with anger. As soon as they reached her, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Jordan, this is what you call a relaxing day out with your daughter? You leave her off to the side and go play with someone else’s kid?”

Jordan’s patience was already wearing thin. He answered coldly, “I asked Lillian if she wanted to try the climbing wall. She was too scared, so she sat out.”

Camila’s hands were trembling. “Lillian’s still recovering. You know she can’t handle something like that!”

“Why not?” Jordan’s tone was icy. “I talked to Dr. Lewis. She said Lillian needs more challenges like this to help her recover.”

Camila stared at him, almost unable to believe her ears.

He trusted Sandra Taylor and Dr. Lewis but never once stopped to think if Lillian could actually handle it.

Her little girl was still so fragile—how could he be so blind?

Camila’s chest ached as she spoke, voice frosty. “So you go play bodyguard for someone else’s kid, while Lillian falls and hurts herself?”

Jordan frowned, explaining flatly, “She tripped while they were playing together earlier. It wasn’t even here, Camila. Can you stop blowing this out of proportion? Kids fall down and get scrapes all the time. Lillian actually loves this place.”

Before Camila could say another word, Daniel piped up, “Aunt Camila, I was playing with Lillian just now. She was really happy! We’re gonna go ride the carousel together next.”

Camila wasn’t having it. Daniel might’ve only been four, but she could see right through his little act.

She couldn’t prove exactly how Lillian got hurt earlier, but one thing was certain: she was not letting this boy anywhere near her daughter again.

“If you want to play, go ahead. Lillian’s not joining you.” Her voice was icy as she gently brushed the dust off her daughter’s jacket.

Jordan’s expression darkened, his usually handsome features now hard. “What’s your problem, Camila? Daniel came all the way here just to cheer Lillian up. He cares about her and wants to help. And being with other kids is good for her recovery. Instead of being grateful, you’re blaming a four-year-old? Are you crazy?”

Camila’s eyes were cold as she looked at him.

How could she not be upset?

The first time Daniel met Lillian, he called her dumb. The second time, he smashed her favorite LEGO set and almost wrecked her playroom. The third, he gave her hot apple cider spiked with hot sauce…
