Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 62

Jordan Smith had finally had enough. The tension in the air dropped like a brick, and his entire presence turned cold and intimidating.

But Camila Davis didn’t so much as glance at him. She just took Lillian’s hand and started to leave.

Jordan, fuming, stepped in front of her again, his voice sharp as a whip. “Camila, this is how you take care of Lillian? Refusing therapy, ignoring the doctor’s advice, not even letting her hang out with kids her own age? Always arguing with me about everything! Honestly, as a mother, don’t you think you’re failing her? I barely even recognize you anymore!”

Camila just looked at him, a little amused by the accusation.

Had he ever really tried to understand her?

From the day they got married, she was the one who always made the effort—checking in on his work, his health, his moods. She remembered if he liked his coffee black or with cream, if he needed allergy meds in spring, even if he’d had a tough day at the office.

And him? He never gave back, not unless Mrs. Smith, his mother, made a fuss—and even then, he barely pretended.

She used to tell herself it was just his personality, or maybe he was too busy with work to notice.

But after Sandra Taylor came back to town, Camila realized she’d been wrong.

It wasn’t that he couldn’t care—he just didn’t want to.

His patience, his warmth, his attention… they were all for someone else.

The only person he ever wanted to understand was Sandra.

Camila’s eyes stung, her throat tight with unshed tears.

She held herself together for a moment, then finally managed to say, cool and distant, “I don’t need you to understand me.”

If he’d been stingy with his affection from the start, she sure didn’t need it now.

Maybe it was the finality in her voice, or the way she seemed to close herself off, but Jordan’s annoyance only grew.

He stepped closer, voice low and biting. “Then who do you want to understand you? Walter Wilson? Camila, what the hell is going on between you two?”

He glared at her. “You know the Smith Corporation and Wilson Corp are rivals, and yet you went to work for them. Was it because of something with Walter? Or are you just trying to get back at me?”

Camila burst out laughing, unable to believe what she was hearing.

“I lost my job, Jordan. I needed to work. I’ve always specialized in pharmaceutical research, not medical AI! What’s wrong with me looking for a new job in my own field?”
