Just thinking about it, Daniel couldn’t help but want to snicker.
But he forced himself to keep a straight face, putting on his best angelic act as he tugged at Jordan Smith’s sleeve.
“Uncle, please don’t be mad, okay? Getting upset isn’t good for your health! What happened just now was all my fault… I made Camila upset. I shouldn’t have come over to play with Lillian.”
Jordan Smith’s anger melted away the moment he heard that. “This isn’t Daniel’s fault at all!”
“But… why doesn’t Camila like me? Am I really… that annoying?” Daniel hung his head, looking genuinely miserable. “I just really like Lillian. I want to be her friend, look after her, protect her…”
Jordan’s heart practically turned to mush. He reached over and ruffled the kid’s hair, comforting him. “Uncle knows. Daniel, you did great today, playing with Lillian and helping her get over her fears. You’re a good kid—everybody likes you. If Camila Davis can’t see that, that’s her problem, not yours!”
“Really?” Daniel asked with wide, innocent eyes.
Jordan nodded. “Of course! I, for one, think you’re awesome.”
Without another word, he bent down and scooped the little guy up. “Now, let’s forget about her. What do you want to do next? Uncle will play with you. We’ll wait for your mom to come pick you up later.”
“Yay, Uncle, you’re the best!” Daniel cheered, throwing his arms around Jordan’s neck. “I want to go on the carousel!”
Jordan grinned. “You got it, buddy. Let’s go ride the carousel!”

After Camila Davis left the amusement park with Lillian, she buckled her into the car seat and immediately grabbed some wet wipes, cleaning up the sticky ice cream stains and bits of grass on her daughter’s clothes.
Lillian sat quietly, letting her mom fuss over her, but her eyes kept drifting back toward the direction of the theme park, full of longing.
That afternoon, almost everything they did was something Daniel liked. Lillian hadn’t gotten to do any of her favorite activities.
Camila hadn’t realized this at first, but now she could see the yearning in her daughter’s gaze.
