Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 72

That night, Camila Davis had no idea what was going through Jordan Smith’s mind as he stared at those three paintings. Frankly, she didn’t care. Whether he’d started to see their daughter in a new light or not didn’t matter anymore.

Once the divorce was finalized, she’d take Lillian and put as much distance between them and Jordan as possible. By then, whatever he felt—or didn’t feel—would be irrelevant.

The next morning, Jordan was already off on another business trip. Camila didn’t even bother to check the details. Right now, all she could focus on was finally getting to meet the psychologist she’d been waiting for. He was Lillian’s best hope for a real recovery, and Camila was counting down the minutes.

Those two days of waiting dragged on forever, but finally, the day of the appointment arrived. Mr. Harris had arranged for a car to pick them up bright and early.

Today, Camila decided not to leave Lillian at home. She figured, if she didn’t know what it would take to convince this doctor to help, maybe bringing Lillian along would make a difference. Who could look at a little girl that adorable and not want to help? Camila knew she herself could never turn away from someone in pain—maybe the doctor was the same.

Apparently, Mr. Harris had given the heads-up, because no one objected to her bringing her daughter along. So, Camila and Lillian climbed into the car and headed straight for the military base.

When they arrived, there was a whole routine of ID checks and security badges before they could even get through the gate. Even from inside the car, Camila could sense the strict, almost intimidating atmosphere outside.

Once inside the base, the car drove further, finally stopping in front of a stately brick building. Someone was already waiting for them outside.

Their host was none other than Colonel Logan White, the leader of the special ops team. Mr. Harris had told her about him—a living legend, younger than Harris but outranking him by miles, known for leading his team through countless impossible missions. They called him “The Tiger”—and it fit.

Camila recognized him immediately. The guy had a presence you could feel across the parking lot. With his piercing blue eyes, squared jaw, and the kind of posture that made you want to stand up straighter, he was all military authority and confidence. Even the soldiers standing behind him looked like they’d come straight out of a recruiting poster—tough and focused.
