Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 94

Sandra Taylor couldn’t help but notice the odd glances being cast her way. It felt like a thousand needles prickling her back, and she gripped her wine glass so tightly she nearly cracked it.

Just then, Lucas Smith strolled over, his eyes shining with a barely concealed excitement. “Sandra, would you care to dance?”

She had to fight the urge to roll her eyes. Was he really that clueless?

But she couldn’t let it show. Instead, she mustered her best sad face and sighed. “Sorry, Lucas. I’m really not in the mood. I totally messed up the project tonight, and Jordan is furious. Now everyone’s looking at me like I’m a leper or something.”

Lucas hated seeing Sandra look so down. He shook his head, trying to reassure her. “Hey, come on, this wasn’t your fault. It was all Camila Davis and her little games, trying to sabotage things just to get back at you. She’s always been a snake, and Jordan knows it better than anyone. Trust me, he’s not mad at you.”

“You really think so?” Sandra asked, her voice small and uncertain.

Lucas nodded, voice full of confidence. “Absolutely. Jordan cares about you, and you know it. And me… well, I’m always here for you too. So don’t worry about those people. Someday, when you and Jordan tie the knot, they’ll realize who the real Mrs. Smith is.”

Sandra managed a grateful smile. “Thanks, Lucas. I feel a lot better already. I’m lucky to have you.”

Meanwhile, Camila Davis left the gala early, the taste of dry Chardonnay still on her lips, and headed straight home.

As she stepped into the foyer, she was surprised to see Jordan Smith there, lounging on the couch. He’d ditched his tux jacket and was down to a crisp white shirt and dark slacks, nursing a glass of red wine. The air around him was heavy, and he looked like he was in a foul mood.

When did he leave the party? Camila wondered, but she didn’t care enough to ask.

Kicking off her heels, she made her way toward the stairs, eager to check on Lillian. At this hour, her little one was usually fast asleep; she just hoped tonight wasn’t one of those nights.

She kept her gaze straight ahead, determined not to acknowledge Jordan as she passed. The chandelier’s glow highlighted her flawless makeup and the way her cocktail dress hugged her figure. She walked with the easy grace of someone who belonged everywhere and nowhere.
