“This campus is pretty big—I figured you might have trouble finding your way, so I thought I’d come meet you!”
Larry Adams greeted her with a warm, polite handshake, his eyes subtly sizing up Camila Davis as he spoke.
He was clearly curious. In fact, he’d come here on purpose, just to see for himself.
After all, he couldn’t help but wonder: what kind of person could get his usually icy, unapproachable friend to make a personal introduction? In all the years he’d known Dennis Williams, he’d never seen him swallow his pride and ask someone for a favor. Never.
Camila, of course, had no idea what was going through Larry’s mind. She just smiled, friendly and composed, exchanging a few pleasantries before saying earnestly, “I believe Mr. Williams mentioned Lillian’s situation to you? I really appreciate your help with her adjustment going forward.”
Larry released her hand and replied easily, “No trouble at all. That’s what teachers are here for.”
Then his gaze shifted to the little girl standing beside Camila. “So, you must be Lillian, right? How about a little welcome gift from your new teacher?”
Lillian shrank back a bit, not answering, her eyes wary and cautious.
But Larry just grinned and, with a little magician’s flourish, turned his empty palms over. Suddenly, as if by magic, a bright pink daisy appeared in his hand.
Lillian’s eyes widened in surprise, curiosity momentarily replacing her shyness.
“Do you like it? It’s for you,” Larry said, still smiling. He gently tucked the flower behind Lillian’s ear.
She was already a beautiful kid, but with that daisy peeking out of her hair, she looked absolutely adorable.
“You look lovely,” Larry complimented.
Lillian, hearing this, reached up to touch the flower, and then—still a little shy—she gave a small, proud smile.
Watching Larry interact so naturally with her daughter, Camila’s worries melted away. In just a few words, he’d managed to put Lillian at ease. She couldn’t help but think, No wonder he’s friends with Mr. Williams. I made the right call choosing this school.
She couldn’t help but wonder—was Mr. Williams just as warm and approachable as Mr. Adams? Or maybe, she thought with a secret smile, he was even softer under that cool exterior. After all, what kind of person goes out of their way to help a child they barely know?
