Without him, this job feels daunting, the weight of it is so heavy that it’s terrifying. What if I fail? What if I can’t do this? What if I’m betrayed by someone I trust like my father was? What if, what if, what if … what if, even after the Academy, I’m not ready?

I’ve seen the difference that the Academy made in Enya. Her confidence, her strength, the power she exudes around the packhouse is invigorating and yet somehow calming. It makes the pack feel secure, like they did when Christian walked in the first day and took control within the first five minutes of his arrival. What if I don’t come home with that same level of confidence?

“I understand completely,” Enya says from the backseat. She and Christian are going to visit his parents in Raif’s pack. Tiana and I agreed to spend our last weekend with our families before going to the Academy, so she’s getting on the Train at the second stop.

“We both do,” Christian says. “But like we’ve discussed, you can see the impact the Academy had on your sister. The Academy is hard. It’s the hardest thing you’ll probably ever face, but it’s worth it. You can thank me, like Enya did, when you come home,” he says, grinning at his mate in the rearview mirror before returning his attention to the road.

“Well, hopefully he doesn’t thank you exactly like I did,” she begins, and I just shake my head. The one good thing about going to the Academy is not having to hear my sister and Christian going at it like bunnies every damn night.

“But, speaking of that, Christian and I have something we want to tell you.”

Because I’m sitting beside Christian, I see him smile and look at Enya again. The smile this time is different, softer, yet still possessive. I already know what she’s going to say before she says it.

I turn and look at her. “And that is …?”

My sister smiles one of the happiest smiles I’ve ever seen on her face. It rivals the smile she had on the night of her birthday when she called Christian mate. She lays her hand on her stomach.

“When you come home from the Academy, there will be one more pack member for you to meet.”

“We wanted you to be the first to know,” Christian says. “You know I thought of you as a brother before Enya and I were mated, but now, we truly are brothers. You’re family and it was important for both Enya and I to tell you before you left for the Academy.”
