"What did you just say?" The voice on the other end was, unexpectedly, Felicity.
Only then did the company's legal counsel realize he'd called the wrong number.
Ever since Mr. Nicholson had informed him that the divorce agreement needed to be revised—specifically, that all of Mr. Nicholson's personal assets were to be given to Winona—the counsel hadn't been able to stop thinking how unfair it was to Miss Felicity Shepherd.
Everyone at Nicholson Group knew how much Miss Shepherd had given to the company, how perfectly matched she and Mr. Nicholson seemed. And now, at the end of it all, Mr. Nicholson was leaving every last cent to someone who might as well be invisible.
The counsel was furious.
Furious on Felicity Shepherd's behalf.
Of course, he would never dare show any sign of this in front of Mr. Nicholson.
After leaving Mr. Nicholson's office, his mind spun with worry over what would become of Felicity Shepherd. The moment he reached his desk, he grabbed the phone and dialed, not hesitating for a second.
It was only when he heard Felicity's voice that he realized his mistake.
Though he felt the injustice keenly—and liked to think of himself as Felicity Shepherd's friend—he knew there was no way she could find out about this.
So what now?
He stammered for a while, then blurted out, "Sorry, wrong number. I have to go."
But Felicity pressed, "Did I hear that right?"
He immediately doubled down, "Yes, yes, you must have misheard. If there's nothing else, I'll hang up."
"Alright."
As soon as he hung up, he wiped his forehead, finding it slick with sweat.
His palms were drenched too.
He got up and went to the restroom to wash his hands and face, only to bump into Gideon Fleming as the latter was coming out.
"Gideon!" he called out.
Gideon glanced at him. "What's up?"
"Ten days ago, Mr. Nicholson said he was divorcing that woman, but when they got to city hall, the court officials called him away, and the divorce never happened. Now today, Mr. Nicholson wants me to revise the agreement—he's actually giving all his personal assets to that woman!"
