The archaeology team slowly made their way up, and when they spotted Mirabella and James just reaching the center, they rushed over to help pull the iron chain.
But then, the whole underground chamber suddenly started shaking violently, with stones raining down from above. It was tough to even stand, let alone lend a hand.
“This place is gonna collapse!” someone shouted.
Wyatt and Curtis gritted their teeth, pulling the chain with everything they had. Even as debris pelted them, they barely noticed.
Mirabella glanced down at what used to be a calm, clear lake; it was now a swirling mess, churned up by gears from below. The chain was just inches above the chaotic surface, and they had maybe a minute to get out.
Drawing in a deep breath, Mirabella sped up. If nothing went wrong, a minute should be enough to make it to safety.
But luck wasn’t on their side. Just three meters from the edge, a huge rock came crashing down, aiming straight for her. In a split-second move, James shoved her forward with all his might.
Mirabella narrowly dodged the rock, and when she looked back, she saw it had hit James's shoulder. He wobbled, and without hesitating, Mirabella stepped back to grab his arm.
Using her support, James steadied himself and muttered, “Go.”
They both picked up the pace.
Wyatt and Curtis watched from the bank, hearts pounding, but kept silent, pulling the chain with all their strength.
