Max stiffened, his eyes dropping to the useless legs below, before his hand brushed over the scar on his face. He forced a smile, but it carried nothing but bitterness. “There’s no rush. Maybe it’s better to wait-”
He never finished the words, but Kayla caught his meaning. She cut him off, “Uncle, family doesn’t care about that. If Mom saw you like this, she would only feel heartache, never disgust.”
She pondered, ‘Real family doesn’t stop loving you because of what you’ve become. They only ache for pain. The ones who would sneer or mock you don’t matter. Their opinions aren’t worth caring about!
Max fell silent, lost in thought at her words.
Kayla didn’t press further. She said goodbye and headed straight for the door.

Watching her small, slight frame leave, Max suddenly realized she was still only a high school girl. He barked an order, “Brat, what are you standing around for? Go walk her out.”
“Ugh. What a hassle.” Elijah sounded reluctant, but he trailed after Kayla anyway.
At that moment, Payton came out of the bathroom and called out, “Mr. Carter, the drain is unclogged. I’ll be heading off now.”
Elijah brightened. “Perfect timing, Payton. Since you’re leaving too, walk her home for me.”
Kayla opened her mouth to refuse, but Payton gave a short nod and agreed without hesitation, “Sure.”
The two of them left Max’s home together, walked down the stairs, and made their way out in silence.
Kayla felt awkward and finally spoke up. “You can just head back. I can get home on my own.”
Payton shook his head. “No. I promised Eli I’d see you home safely. Otherwise, I’d be going back on my word.”
Kayla was left speechless, thinking it wasn’t really necessary to take being so literal about keeping a promise at a time like this.
Since she couldn’t talk Payton out of it, she stopped insisting. The neighborhood was chaotic at night, after all, and having someone with her eased her nerves.
Kayla said, “Thank you for that. But there’s one thing I need to remind you. Not a word of what you heard today can get out, or-”
Before she could finish her warning, Payton let out a quiet laugh. “Or else I’ll pay the price. I know. You’ve said it more than enough times. I remember.”
Kayla narrowed her eyes, annoyed at how her warning carried no weight at all.
She gave a frustrated huff. “As long as you know.”
They then walked side by side in silence. Payton sneaked a glance at her before asking cautiously, “Have you

been to the neighborhood on the south side before? Did you have something to take care of there?”
Earlier, Elijah had mentioned Kayla had been there, and Payton couldn’t figure out what business a wealthy young lady like her would have in that area.
Kayla’s lashes flickered as she hid the change in her expression, lowering her voice on purpose. “Nothing much. Just wandering around.”
Payton made a sound of acknowledgment, clearly unconvinced. But since she didn’t want to say more, he decided not to press.
