After the wedding, Bailee’s father tested and doubted him at every turn. But Jackson acted as if nothing touched him, still caring for her in every detail. That was why she slowly accepted him, why she gave him her heart and truly became his wife.

When Bailee thought back on those years, she could no longer tell what had been genuine and what had been a lie. All she felt was that she had become a fool, spun around by Jackson like some cruel joke.

She regretted it. Regretted not listening to her father sooner, not keeping her guard up, until she ended up here, humiliated and trampled on without the strength to fight back.

At that thought, Bailee’s reddened eyes narrowed slightly, and she thought, ‘I used to be Perry Group’s heiress. How could I let anyone make a fool out of me like this?‘

As the thought lingered, the sound of a car pulling up came from outside.

Bailee’s long lashes flickered. She drew in a deep breath, wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes, and picked up the cup of coffee that had long since gone cold. She took a slow sip.

Suddenly, the lights snapped on, startling Bailee and making her squint against the glare. That was when she heard Jackson’s familiar voice. “Why are you sitting in the dark? What are you doing here all by yourself?” Jackson asked.

Bailee turned her head slowly, realizing only then that the sky outside had already turned pitch–black. ‘It’s this late already?‘ she wondered.

Hiding the chill in her eyes, she curved her lips into a faint smile and replied softly, “I was thinking about

you.”

Jackson was taken aback. All these years, Bailee had rarely spoken to him with such sweetness. Hearing it so suddenly today left him oddly unsettled.

He frowned, “Why the sudden change of tone? Did something catch your eye? Just tell my secretary to buy it for you.”

Bailee sneered inwardly, ‘So, Jackson thinks of me as no different from Ruby, huh? Does he really believe a woman can only get what she wants by pleasing a man?

‘Ridiculous. I was once the Perry family’s first heiress. What could I possibly need him to buy for me?‘

“It’s nothing. I just missed you, that’s all.” Bailee stepped forward, reaching to take the briefcase from Jackson’s

hand.

She placed it on the sofa, keeping her head slightly lowered, though her gaze slid toward Jackson from the corner of her eye. In a quiet voice, she asked, “I brought you lunch at the office today and called you. Why
