“We’re not trying to make this harder than it has to be. Just apologize to the whole school in front of us, admit you’re trash, and drop out on your own. Do that, and we’ll let this go.”
Kayla looked at her as if she were an idiot. “And who do you think you are, to say you’re letting me off?”
She pondered. First of all, I’m not even pregnant. They’ve been spreading rumors, parroting each other’s nonsense. If anything, I should be the one holding them accountable for slander. And Hailey thinks she has the right to judge me?
Even if I were pregnant, it’s still my business. It’s not like she’s the father. For them to spread it around maliciously with no sense of decency–what right do they have to lecture me?‘
The disdain in Kayla’s eyes only fueled Hailey’s fury. She jabbed a finger at Kayla’s face, ready to curse her
out.
Kayla’s eyes narrowed. In a swift motion, she grabbed Hailey’s finger and twisted it sharply.
“Ah!” Hailey let out a cry of pain. Her body instinctively crouched halfway down, trying to ease the pressure in her hand. “Kay… Kayla, let go… let go, please.”
Kayla gave a sneer and released her grip. “Try pointing your claws at me again, and I’ll break more than your hand.”
As Kayla’s words fell, the knife in her hand snapped open and shut with a metallic click. The sharp sound cut through the air, and at that instant, everyone watching felt a ripple of unease.
Hailey clutched her reddened fingers, eyes burning with fury. If looks could kill, Kayla would have been torn to pieces already.
Kayla showed no fear. Her gaze swept over the crowd before fixing on Hailey. Her voice turned cold as she said, “Since when do the police owe you updates on an ongoing investigation?
“Besides, this is the digital age. All they need to do is trace the IP address of the files uploaded to the campus network, and they’ll find out exactly who started the rumor.
“It’s basic logic. Don’t tell me you’re too dense to grasp that. What era did you crawl out from, a museum exhibit?”
Then, Kayla looked at Marianna with a faint, mocking smile. “Right, Marianna?” She was genuinely looking forward to the moment the police laid the evidence on the table, curious how Marianna would try to wriggle
out of it.
Marianna’s chest tightened, and she instinctively glanced at Davon.
When he gave a slight nod, the panic in Marianna’s heart slowly eased. Her expression smoothed out, and the corners of her lips curved into a pleased smile.
She lifted her chin and said calmly, “Why are you asking me? How would I know?”

Kayla’s brow furrowed. Her eyes had stayed on Marianna the whole time, and she caught the flash of panic that had crossed her face.
Yet after that subtle exchange with Davon, the panic vanished completely. It made Kayla wonder what exactly he had done.
