“So you went through all that trouble to get the surveillance footage, and now you’re just going to let it sit there? Let it go to waste?” Payton asked.
She’d worked hard to get that video. Seemed weird for it to just collect dust–that wasn’t Kayla’s style at all.
Kayla’s steps slowed. Something sparked in her eyes as she turned back, her tone almost playful. “If you were me, what would you do with it?”
Their gazes locked. Payton’s eyes darkened for a moment before she answered, with no hesitation. “If it were me? I’d hand it over to the Mitchell family.”
Kayla’s brows lifted, genuine surprise flickering across her face.
‘He’s thinking exactly what I’m thinking,‘ Kayla thought, a thrill of recognition running through her.
But she smoothed her expression quickly, letting confusion color her voice instead. “Oh? Give it to the Mitchells? Why would I do that?” She tilted her head slightly. “Don’t forget–Hailey got dragged to the police station because of me in the first place.”
Payton caught the shift in Kayla’s expression immediately. The corner of his mouth lifted–barely there, but definitely smug.
He said, “Sure, the cops took Hailey away, but with the Mitchell family’s connections? That’s nothing. They’ll have her out in no time–that part’s easy.
“But here’s the thing. Hailey spread those nasty rumors about you, and now everyone knows. The school can’t keep her after that. The Mitchell family’s reputation? Trashed. They’re humiliated.”
He continued, “Hailey got dragged into this mess because of you, but she knows Marianna and Davon set her up. And if we give the Mitchells this surveillance footage–show them exactly what Marianna did–they’re not gonna let it slide. No way they swallow that kind of betrayal.”
His eyes glinted with something sharp. “They can’t come at Marianna openly, but behind the scenes? They’ll make her life hell. Trust me.”
When Payton finished, the smile slowly faded from Kayla’s face. She stared at him, her expression unreadable -a complicated mix of surprise and wariness.
“I thought he just got lucky, guessing what I was planning,’ she thought, her pulse quickening. ‘But this is exactly what I was thinking. Word for word. She couldn’t brush this off anymore.
She’d been planning to hand that video straight to the Mitchell family.
Today, Marianna and Davon thought Hailey was done for, so they didn’t hold back—they just tore into her without mercy, saying whatever nasty things came to mind.
Hailey had always been the queen bee around here–no way she’d ever forgive being insulted and betrayed by
Marianna and Davon.

So once Hailey walked out of the police station, even if she couldn’t show her face at school anymore, you can bet she’d come for Marianna and Davon to settle the score.
Kayla wouldn’t even need to lift a finger. Hailey would destroy them herself.
That had been her plan all along. And somehow, Payton had figured out the exact same angle. The realization sent a chill down her spine.
He really was the guy who aced the entrance exam and got into school as number one, Kayla thought. “That brain of his is seriously something else.’
But a thread of doubt wound through her mind. ‘Why had Payton slipped from Class A all the way down to Class G? And why were his test scores now even worse than mine?‘
A realization struck her–Payton was wrapped in layers of secrets.
The mystery of it pulled at her curiosity like an itch she couldn’t scratch.
