If I’m going to die, I’m going to die, Tania thought desperately. At least I’m tough enough to take a beating
Not like Kayla, who was delicate and precious. If she really got hit a few times, she’d definitely get seriously
hurt.
But the pain she expected never came. Instead, she heard Hailey’s mocking laugh. “Idiot!”
Tania raised an eyebrow and slowly opened one eye, stealing a glance at Hailey. She watched as Hailey’s face twisted with disdain, her gaze sliding away dismissively before turning toward Kayla instead.
Hailey’s mocking gaze swept over her dismissively before turning toward Kayla, her lips curling into something between a sneer and a snarl. “Kayla, don’t think I’m gonna thank you for what you did. I hate you- I always have, and I always will!”
Hailey always assumed getting out of the station was all thanks to her family’s pull.
But when she got home, her parents totally went off on her, and that was when she found out–Kayla had decided not to press charges, which was the only reason she got released so fast.
It left her totally confused and more than a little resentful.
Sure, the campus rumors weren’t her doing, but she’d definitely made Kayla’s life hell in other ways. She’d even come close to wrecking her.
By all rights, Kayla should hate her guts–should want nothing more than to see her suffer in that police station. So, why was she being so kind?‘ Hailey thought.
She despised Kayla’s goody–two–shoes act, always forgiving and acting all noble–it just made Hailey feel like the ultimate fool in comparison.
Kayla just raised an eyebrow, looking totally unfazed. “Well then, I guess that’s tough for you–having to remember me all these years.”
The casual, almost dismissive way Kayla brushed off her words made Hailey’s teeth clench. Her composure was shattered completely.
“Kayla, do you think you’re so amazing? Do you think I’m stupid–getting played around like some puppet, used as someone’s weapon?” Hailey’s voice cracked with frustration. “You must be laughing at me inside, aren’t you?”
Kayla shook her head with maddening calm. “I’m too busy to waste time laughing at you.”
That indifference–that complete lack of care–twisted something painful in Hailey’s chest. The dismissal hurt worse than any insult could have.
“You’re so infuriating. How can you be so calm about everything? Would it kill you to just laugh at me once?”
If Kayla would just mock her a little, Hailey could spit back all the venom she’d been holding in. At least then she wouldn’t have to sit with all this pointless guilt, or stew over how stupid she’d been before.

But no matter what, Kayla just wouldn’t react–no anger, no snarky comeback, nothing at all. Hailey felt utterly crushed, and before she could stop herself, tears streamed down her face. “Kayla, you bastard. I hate you”
The outburst hit like a lightning strike in the quiet corridor. Kayla stumbled backward, caught completely off- guard by Hailey’s sudden explosion. Her hands shot up defensively, a reflexive gesture that made her look almost guilty.
Whoa, hey–why are you crying? I didn’t hit you or anything,” Kayla said, her voice pitching higher with panic. “Don’t try to pin this on me.”
Hailey’s crying suddenly hit pause–then she burst out bawling even louder, like she’d just been totally wrecked. “Kayla, you’re so mean.”
Kayla’s lips twitched–she was great at toughing things out, but throw tears into the mix and she was totally lost. Hailey’s meltdown had her completely stumped.
Man, the way she’s making me look right now, it’s like I’m some kind of scumbag ex, Kayla thought, feeling awkward and a bit amused.
She shot Tania a pleading look, hoping she’d swoop in and save the day.
