Kayla’s lips twitched into a cold smile, but she didn’t stop for a second. She kept smashing her backpack into him with everything she had.
“Nice try! You’ve got some nerve pretending to be my brother. Tristian’s not some creep lurking around in the dark trying to scare people.
“I’m gonna beat the crap out of you, you thief! That’s what you get for sneaking into my house at night,” Kayla yelled, swinging harder with each word.
Kayla had been practicing her boxing lately, and she’d gotten strong. She wasn’t holding back at all. Every hit landed with her full strength behind it.
Tristian was getting destroyed, dodging and scrambling around just trying not to get wrecked. He couldn’t even fight back, just kept running and yelling desperately.
“Kayla, stop! I’m not a thief, I’m your brother. Can’t you even recognize my voice?” Tristian shouted.
Kayla was dripping sweat by now. She’d really gone all out. If she kept this up much longer, things would get messy, so she finally stopped and flipped on the light.
There was Tristian, curled up on the floor looking absolutely pathetic. His face was swollen and red, covered in bruises, and he looked like he’d been run over.
Kayla’s eyes went wide, playing shocked. “Wait, it really is you? What the hell were you doing, wandering around in the dark in the middle of the night? Are you sleepwalking or something?”
‘Ha! Serves him right for trying to scare me, Kayla thought, barely able to keep from grinning.
Tristian slowly dragged himself off the floor, carefully touching his swollen face. Every poke made him suck in a sharp breath through his teeth. He looked furious, his face all twisted up in pain.
“Kayla, how dare you–ow…” Tristian tried to snap at her, but the second he opened his mouth, his busted lip screamed in protest, and he yelped. His whole face scrunched up in pain, making him look completely ridiculous.
Kayla barely held back her laughter, putting on her most innocent expression and waving her hands like she’d done nothing wrong.
“What are you talking about, Tristian?” Kayla said, sounding totally hurt and defensive. “I’d never hit you on purpose. You were creeping around in the dark and suddenly grabbed me.
“I thought you were some burglar who broke in. I was terrified, so I just reacted without thinking. How was I supposed to know it was you?”
“You’re still lying? You couldn’t recognize my voice? Who are you kidding?” Tristian snapped back, exasperated.
Kayla pressed her lips together, fighting not to laugh, then shook her head with the most pitiful look she could manage.

“Anil versnudo, even if you had said something, some random guy jumps out at me in total darkness claiming to be my brother? Yeah, right. Like anyone would believe that.”
Refore Tristian could lose it on her, Kayla jumped in first. “Look, you’re always doing impulsive stuff, but this was just ridiculous. Thank goodness I figured out it was you before things got worse. What if I’d actually hurt you badly? I’d never forgive myself.
Tristian’s face twisted with fury, his eyes practically rolling back, teeth grinding so hard others could hear it.
Kayla had beaten him black and blue, but now she was acting innocent, claiming he wasn’t even hurt.
Tristian pointed a shaking finger at her, words grinding out through clenched teeth. “Are you blind? Look at me. I’m covered in bruises from your beating!
