Payton looked rough. He’d lost weight, and his face was all sharp angles now. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and exhaustion clung to him like he hadn’t slept in days.

“Where the hell has he been?‘ Kayla wondered. She almost asked, but given the situation, she kept quiet.

Payton pulled Kayla’s hand free from Davon’s grip. When he saw the angry red marks on her pale wrist, something cold flickered in his eyes. “You okay?” he asked quietly.

‘Such a princess. So delicate, Payton thought, though there was no real bite to it.

Kayla pushed her questions aside and shook her head, her expression cool and unreadable.

‘I went through hell in my past life. A little red skin? That’s nothing,’ Kayla thought.

With Payton blocking him, Davon’s expression darkened even more. And seeing Payton standing so close to Kayla just made his blood boil.

“This is between me and Kayla. Who the hell are you to butt in?” Davon snapped.

Davon let out a mocking laugh. “Payton, don’t act like I don’t know who you are. You’re just some street thug pretending to be tough.

“It’s obvious you’re only hanging around Kayla because she’s loaded, kissing up to her for money. You’re dead last in our grade. What makes you think you can talk to me?”

Before Payton could respond, Kayla’s eyes went ice cold. She shoved Davon hard, and he slammed straight into the wall.

“Davon, why are you so damn petty? When someone helps me, you call it sucking up. But when you help Marianna, suddenly you’re the hero? Get over yourself,” Kayla snorted coldly.

Davon stared at her, eyes wide with shock. “You actually pushed me… for him?”
