The lecture hall was big and meant for open classes anyway, so Payton sitting with them didn’t seem that weird Kayla just let it go.
Kayla thought for a moment, then leaned over and quietly thanked Payton. “Thanks for what you did earlier.”
Kayla used to want to keep her distance from Payton, but after everything that happened, it was obvious he’d already gotten on Davon and Marianna’s bad side. There wasn’t much point in avoiding him anymore. Might as well just treat him like any other classmate.
‘After all those mean things I said to him, does he still hold a grudge?‘ Kayla wondered.
Tania grinned and jumped in. “Seriously, Payton, thanks for stepping up today! If you hadn’t been there, Kay would’ve had to deal with that jerk Davon all by herself.”
Kayla pressed her lips together, wanting to argue. Even without Payton, she wouldn’t have let Davon push her around. If anything, he would’ve been the one getting his ass kicked. But the words sat on her tongue before she swallowed them back.
‘Forget it. Payton was just trying to help. If I say that, I’ll look ungrateful,‘ Kayla thought.
Payton looked a little surprised by Kayla’s attitude, but he recovered quickly and smiled, “No problem. We’re classmates, we should look out for each other. Besides, you’ve helped me out too.”
Kayla’s head snapped toward him, her eyes wide with surprise. ‘What did I help him with?‘ she wondered. Wait… does he know I paid his mom’s hospital bills?‘ Her stomach dropped. ‘No way. I told the hospital to keep it quiet. There’s no way he found out.
Before Kayla could ask, Tania cut in, clearly curious. “Wait, when did this happen? Kay, what’d you do?”
Kayla blinked and quickly shook her head. “Me? What good could I possibly do? Didn’t you hear Marianna calling me a spoiled brat who bullies everyone?”
Tania scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Please. She never has anything nice to say. Don’t listen to her. I’d never believe that garbage.”
Kayla raised an eyebrow, a small smile tugging at her lips. “You really trust me that much?”
Tania didn’t even hesitate. She nodded right away. “Obviously. If you actually wanted to bully someone, Marianna wouldn’t still be walking around here acting like she owns the place.”
With Kayla’s family connections, getting Marianna kicked out of school would be easy. But Marianna was still here, which proved Kayla had never bothered messing with her.
What Tania didn’t say out loud was that Kayla had always looked out for her, even though she was just a scholarship student. Kayla went out of her way to help without making Tania feel bad about it. Anyone who actually knew Kayla would know she wasn’t some spoiled princess.
Kayla’s lips twitched into a faint smile. “Yeah, it’s such a simple thing, but so many people just can’t wrap their heads around it.”
