Davon’s heart warmed, and his gaze softened as he looked at Marianna. “You’re so thoughtful. But childhood friends or not, she’s biting off more than she can chew. If she loses, it’ll be a wake–up call. Honestly, I’m just helping her face reality and grow.”

Davon and Marianna kept chatting like no one else existed. They were clearly scheming to humiliate Kayla but still tried to dress it up as something noble. Kayla almost wanted to roll her eyes.

“Hey, can you two stop with the gross couple act and leave me out of it? Seriously, it’s disgusting,” Kayla snapped. It was like she was just a prop in their cringey little performance.

A sly glint flashed in Marianna’s eyes, but she kept up her innocent act. “Kayla, I already warned you. If you wanna compete so badly, fine. Just remember to keep your word when you lose. Don’t come crying to us later saying we didn’t stop you.”

Kayla raised an eyebrow. “You’re really that confident you can beat me?”

What an idiot. Does she even realize how terrible her grades are?‘ Marianna thought with an internal sneer. But outwardly, she put on her sweetest innocent look. “I’m not trying to be mean. It’s just that everyone knows your grades. Isn’t it kinda obvious you’ll lose?”

Marianna wasn’t exactly wrong. Their current grades weren’t even in the same ballpark.

Kayla wasn’t about to waste her breath on a petty argument. She cut straight to the point. “Hope you stay this cocky. But what if I actually beat you?”

Marianna shot back instinctively, “Are you kidding? There’s no way.” But the second the words left her mouth, she scrambled to backtrack. “Kayla, don’t get mad, okay? I wasn’t trying to insult you or anything—”

Kayla wasn’t even bothered. She just raised a hand, cutting off Marianna’s excuses. “Drop the act. I see right through you. Here’s the deal. If I win, your whole Class A apologizes in front of all of Class G and admits we’re better. As for you…”

Kayla’s eyes locked onto Marianna with a sharp look. “I won’t go too hard on you. Just run ten laps around the field and yell that you’re a piece of shit, loud enough for everyone to hear. So, do you dare?”

Marianna fired back without missing a beat. “What right do you have? That’s insane!”

Kayla actually laughed. Marianna’s double standards were almost funny. “Oh really? Weren’t you the one who said if I lost, I should call myself useless in front of the whole school?

“But when it’s your turn, suddenly it’s ‘too much? Or maybe you’re not as confident as you act? Afraid you’ll lose?”

‘I know exactly how to bait you too, Kayla thought smugly.

Tania jumped in from the side. “Wow, Marianna, when it’s someone else getting humiliated, that’s fine–but when it’s you, suddenly it’s unfair? You’re so two–faced.”

The rest of Class G piled on. “Yeah! You guys wanted this bet in the first place. Now you don’t wanna play?

Marianna instantly played the victim card, shooting Davon a helpless look like Kayla was bullying her for no

reason.

Davon’s heart practically melted seeing Marianna look so hurt. He glared at Kayla like he wanted to murder her. “Kayla, Marianna’s got a gentle heart. Why are you targeting her?

“She just moved up from Class G to Class A, so naturally, she’d want to go easy on you. But if you’re so desperate for a showdown, how about you face me instead?”

Everyone in both classes looked shocked. Davon was literally the top student in the entire school, and now he wanted to compete against Kayla, who was practically dead last. The matchup sounded completely insane.

Kayla couldn’t believe Davon would stoop so low just for Marianna. ‘Can he get any more shameless?‘ she thought. It was so ridiculous she almost laughed.

Before Kayla could say anything, a deep voice cut through the crowd, saying exactly what she was thinking.

“Davon, you really know how to play hero, huh? You’ve got zero shame left. Sure, Marianna’s ‘too timid,‘ but Kayla’s a girl too. You’re the number one in the whole school and you wanna challenge her? Isn’t that just straight–up bullying?” Payton said.

Kayla turned and locked eyes with Payton. His gaze was ice–cold but quietly intense, and somehow, hearing him call Davon out like that made her heart flutter with unexpected gratitude.

Across both her lives, only her mom and Tania had ever stood up for her like this. No one else had ever had her back.

Payton must’ve noticed her looking because he met her gaze, and somehow, that look was enough to calm her down. The anger Davon had stirred up started to fade.

Davon was left speechless, a pang of guilt hitting him. He glanced at Kayla, only to find her completely focused on Payton, like Davon didn’t even exist.

Seeing them so locked in made him irrationally annoyed, and whatever guilt he’d felt just vanished. “She didn’t even say anything. What’s it to you?”

Payton flashed a cocky smirk. “Of course it’s got something to do with me. I’m Class G too. If you’re messing with my classmate, I’m not gonna just sit here.

“So here’s my offer. Kayla competes with Marianna, and I compete with you. If we both win, the bet stands. But if either of us loses, Class A wins. You game, or are you gonna chicken out?”

Davon glanced back and forth between Payton and Kayla, then let out a snide laugh. “You’ve got some nerve talking big like that. What makes you think Kayla would ever trust you?”

“Two losers teaming up–still amounts to nothing, Davon thought dismissively.

But before Davon even finished speaking, Kayla answered without hesitation. “I trust him.”
