Just then, Ravenna walked in, her face stormy as she carried a stack of papers. The whole class immediately sat up straight, not daring to say another word.

Ravenna slammed the papers down on the desk and swept her gaze across the room. The second she spotted Kayla and Payton, all that pentup anger came flooding out. Kayla, Payton, stand up. Now!

Kayla raised an eyebrow. She’s back?she thought, surprised.

Kayla and Payton exchanged glances and stood up without protest.

Kayla met Ravenna’s eyes and caught the flash of guilt mixed with venom there.

But there was something else too, something that looked almost like smugness. Wait, what’s she so smug about?Kayla thought, confused. Hasn’t she been dodging that public apology this whole time? So what’s with the attitude?

Before Kayla could figure it out, Ravenna grabbed a piece of chalk and hurled it straight at them.

Kayla sidestepped it easily while Payton caught it midair, tossed it once in his palm, then crushed it to powder.

Ravenna’s face went even darker. Unbelievable! You two are completely out of control, acting like you can do whatever you want!

Kayla’s expression went cold. Ms. Nielsen, you get upset and just start throwing things at us? What exactly did we do that’s so terrible?

Ravenna slammed her hand on the desk. You’ve got some nerve acting innocent! You seriously don’t know what you did?

Kayla and Payton exchanged a look. Both instantly knew this was about the bet with Class A.

Oh, you mean that bet with Class A?Kayla said casually.

Ravenna’s face only got darker, her mood turning even uglier. Hmph. You seriously have the nerve to bring that up?she snapped.

Kayla’s expression went cold at Ravenna’s snide tone. Ms. Nielsen, what’s wrong with us making a bet with Class A? You’re our teacher. Shouldn’t you be happy we’re actually trying for once?

Ravenna didn’t even try to hide her contempt. Her face twisted into a mocking sneer. Happy? What am I supposed to be happy about? You’ve humiliated me completely.

Thanks to you idiots, I can’t even show my face in the teacher’s lounge anymore. Am I supposed to celebrate that you have zero selfawareness? You’re just a bunch of kids who’ll never make it to college, and you dragged my reputation down with you.

Ravenna folded her arms and stared down at them with icy contempt. Me? Out of line? How exactly am I the problem here? Do you have any idea what you’ve done?

Every teacher is laughing at me behind my back, saying my class is full of hopeless dreamers living in fantasy land. So tell me. Who’s really crossing the line?

You think winning one debate makes you special? You actually want to challenge Class A on grades? Payton, you spend all your time hanging around with those punks. Have you even looked at your own report card? What makes you think you can compete with them?

Her gaze shifted to Kayla. And you, you could’ve just coasted through life as some spoiled princess, wasting your family’s money. I wouldn’t have cared. But do you really think being rich will magically make you smarter? You’re hopelessly naive.

Ravenna jabbed a finger at the rest of the class. And all of you? Being stupid is bad enough, but you can’t even use common sense. When these two were making fools of themselves, what were you doing? Just sitting there like braindead zombies?

Didn’t it occur to any of you to stop them? You made such a spectacle of yourselves, and you’re not even ashamed. How am I supposed to face the other teachers now? Why am I so unlucky to be stuck with disasters like you?

The room went dead silent. Some students looked humiliated, others sat frozen in shock, and a few couldn’t hide their anger.

Kayla’s voice turned icecold. Ms. Nielsen, you’re supposed to be our teacher. Do you even hear yourself? When Class A calls us garbage and worthless, you think we should just sit there and take it?

Ravenna let out a harsh laugh. What, are they wrong? Aren’t you all exactly that, trash and losers?

No one said a word. They just stared, completely stunned. They couldn’t believe their own teacher had just said that.

Ravenna wasn’t done yet. She kept going, her voice dripping with contempt. It’s exactly because I’m your teacher that I know what you’re really capable of, and trust me, it’s not much. You’re all hopeless.

I teach you whatever, you learn whatever, and we all just coast until graduation. Wouldn’t that be easier? But no, you had to go and make stupid bets like you’re actually somebody. Absolutely ridiculous.

Let me spell it out for you. With your current grades, community college is the best you can hope for. Meanwhile, those Class A kids? They’re all heading to top universities. Where do you get off thinking you can compete with them? I’m so pissed.

The Class G studentsfaces grew darker and darker. Some of them had tears welling up, but they fought hard to hold them back.

If it had been students from other classes trashing them, it wouldn’t have cut this deep. But hearing it from their own teacher made it almost unbearable.

Kayla’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. She was about to snap back when Payton’s cold voice suddenly
