Marianna had heard every word Ravenna said. Who knew how she’d twist the story once she got back to Class A, mocking them to everyone.
There was no way Class G could be happy about that.
Ravenna saw the whole class sitting there in silence. Her smile disappeared. She looked ready to tear into them, but with Rachel watching, she held back.
Rachel kept that faint smile on her face and spoke softly. “No need to be so hard on Class G, Ms. Nielsen. Marianna made it into Class A because she’s naturally smart and works hard.
“She only spent time in Class G temporarily after transferring. As for the rest of them, even if they wanted to study, I doubt they could ever…”
Rachel didn’t finish, but everyone got the message loud and clear.
Marianna came from Class G, but she was nothing like the others.
Ravenna’s smile barely stayed on her face. Only an awkward grin remained.
Kayla looked up and studied Rachel carefully. She might’ve been all smiles on the outside, but the contempt. in her eyes for Class G and Ravenna couldn’t have been more obvious.
One word came to Kayla’s mind–superior. Just by standing there, Rachel acted like she was better than everyone in the room.
“Alright then, I’ll let you all get back to trying your best. I’m taking Marianna with me now,” Rachel said. With that, she led Marianna out of the classroom.
As Marianna walked through the door, she turned back and shot Kayla a look. Her lips twitched into a smug half–smile, and the mockery in her eyes was impossible to miss.
The second they left, Ravenna’s smile vanished. She glared at Kayla and Payton with cold eyes and snapped, “Why are you two still standing there? Get out, now!”
Kayla and Payton didn’t move.
Ravenna looked furious. She slammed the chalk she’d been holding onto the podium, crossed her arms, and leaned back with a defiant look. “Oh, so you wanna fight me on this? Fine. If you’re not leaving, then I’m done teaching. Figure out your own homework for the rest of class.
“I’ll start class again when you finally get lost. Not like it matters. You’re all losers anyway. A few extra minutes of teaching won’t change that.”
Class G had dealt with Ravenna’s passive–aggressive comments before, but she’d never been this openly nasty. She wasn’t even trying to hide her disgust anymore, and nobody could take it.
“Ms. Nielsen, how are we trash? You’re supposed to be our teacher. How can you talk to us like this?” someone finally spoke up.

That opened the floodgates. More voices joined in.
“Yeah, Ms. Nielsen, that’s way out of line,” someone said.
“It’s like we’re not even your students, just people you hate!” another shouted.
“How can a teacher be so mean and irresponsible?” A third shook their head.

But the pushback didn’t faze Ravenna at all. If anything, the mockery on her face got even more obvious.
“Did I say anything wrong? Aren’t you all trash?” Ravenna shot back. “Can any of you honestly say you’re getting into college? If you hate what I’m saying so much, why don’t you have your parents go complain to the principal and get me replaced?
“Oh wait, you can’t. No other teacher would take this class. If I’d known what a waste of time you
all were before I transferred here, you think I’d choose to babysit you? And honestly, do any of you even have the guts to bring your parents in?”
The classroom went dead silent.
Ravenna wasn’t exactly wrong. Everyone in Class G was either failing out or broke, sometimes both. The school and even their own families had basically written them off, so nobody ever dared make waves.
What they feared most was when teachers called home, because they’d just get screamed at by their parents
anyway.
That was exactly why Ravenna could act this shamelessly.
Ravenna looked around with satisfaction, then turned her attention to Kayla and Payton, her smile mocking. “Well? Still not leaving? Since you two are such big shots with all this loyalty, fine. Everyone, study on your own. I’m done teaching.”
Just as Tania was about to speak up, Kayla cut her off with a cold laugh. “No need to punish everyone else because of us. We’ll leave,” she said flatly.
Ms. Nielsen barely teaches anyway. Whether I’m here or not doesn’t matter,‘ Kayla thought. ‘I’d learn more outside memorizing vocab.
Kayla grabbed her book and walked straight out. Once she reached the hallway, she found a shaded spot, leaned against the railing, and started reviewing vocabulary. Payton followed right behind her.
Their eyes met briefly, and something passed between them.
Kayla bit her lip, guilt flickering across her face. “Sorry for dragging you into this.”
If I hadn’t gotten into it with Marianna today and kicked off this whole mess, he wouldn’t have gotten dragged into it, Kayla thought, guilt creeping into her voice. ‘Now he’s stuck going up against Davon, and he got kicked
out of class because of me!
Payton just shrugged, a careless grin spreading across his face. “Come on, it’s nothing. You know that old hag had it out for me forever. Today just gave her an excuse.
