Kayla’s hand shot out and grabbed his tie, yanking it hard. Her other hand caught the knot and twisted it tight.
Tristian didn’t see it coming. The tie bit into his neck, cutting off his air. His face went bright red in seconds, and his eyes started rolling back. He thrashed around, trying to break free, his voice coming out strangled and raw. “You–you bitch. Let go!”
Kayla didn’t loosen her grip. She pulled tighter, like she was one second away from snapping his neck. completely.
Tristian’s face turned a darker shade of red. His breathing got weaker. His tongue pushed out. He barely struggled anymore.
That was when Kayla finally spoke, her voice ice–cold. “Tell me, right now. Who gets to decide whether you live or die?”
Tristian’s eyes went wide with pure terror. He knew if he said the wrong thing, she’d actually do it. She’d kill
him.
Their eyes locked. His eyes were panicked and desperate, while Kayla’s eyes were cold and merciless. They were nothing alike in that moment.
Just when Tristian thought Kayla had really lost it and he was about to die, she let go. He collapsed to the ground, gasping and coughing, completely wiped out.
For a split second there, Kayla had almost killed him. But at the last moment, she’d stopped.
Kayla had been given a second chance at life, and yeah, she wanted revenge. But she wasn’t about to dirty her hands or throw away her future because of these pieces of shit.
For someone as full of himself as Tristian, a quick death would be too easy. Way too easy. It was better to make him lose everything bit by bit. That would hurt him more.
“Kayla, you bitch! Just you wait. I’m not letting this go!” Tristian clutched his neck, his voice hoarse and furious.
Kayla dusted off her hands with disgust and said coldly, “Whatever you try, bring it on. I’ll be waiting.”
If Kayla couldn’t avoid it, then she’d fight to the bitter end.
“What the hell are you two doing at this hour?” A gentle voice suddenly came from upstairs while the two faced off. Both of them looked up to see Bailee walking over in a black silk nightgown, holding a small pig.
The little pig was brown and gray with silver cars, wearing an adorable pink princess dress.
Tristian glanced at the pig in Bailee’s arms and instinctively backed up two steps, his face full of disgust. He covered his nose and immediately complained, “Mom, you need to do something about Kayla. She’s completely out of control. She actually attacked me and almost strangled me!”
Damn Kayla, Tristian thought. ‘Last time I didn’t have proof, but let’s see you explain your way out of this.‘

Kayla’s expression shifted slightly. She dropped her hands and nervously fidgeted with the edge of her clothes, trying to figure out how to explain this to her mom.
Bailee glanced at Kayla’s nervous face but didn’t get angry. Instead, she turned a cold look on Tristian. “You’ve got some nerve. You’re her older brother. You knew Kay was struggling at school, and instead of helping her, you schemed against her over some stupid bet.
“Getting hit is the least you deserve.”
Tristian’s eyes widened in shock. ‘Mom knows?‘ he thought. ‘She never pays attention to anything. All she cares about is shopping and spa days. How does she know what I did? Kayla must’ve ratted me out again. That sneaky bitch.
Tristian glared at Kayla and shot back, “Mom, how is this my fault? A bet is a bet. It’s like competition in business. If Kayla can’t win, that’s on her for not being good enough.”
Bailee looked at the cold fury in Tristian’s eyes and suddenly felt like she was staring at a stranger. She could hardly believe her own son would say something like that. ‘Kay is his own sister. How could he treat her this way?‘ Bailee thought. She felt deeply disappointed.
For a moment, the image of Tristian yelling at Kayla overlapped with memories of Jackson blaming her, making Bailee’s heart clench. Her breath caught in her throat.
Something seemed to cross Bailee’s mind, and she suddenly spoke up. “Tris, did you know your dad got a new secretary?”
Tristian had joined the company right after graduation, so he probably saw Jackson pretty regularly at work. He had to know about Jackson and Ruby by now. ‘Why hasn’t he ever mentioned it?‘ Bailee thought.
Since Bailee had stopped grilling him about sabotaging Kayla, Tristian’s anger cooled a bit, though he still sounded annoyed. “You mean Ruby? Yeah, I know. Why are you suddenly asking about this?”
Bailee’s heart skipped a beat. She immediately picked up on something off about the way Tristian talked about Ruby. Ignoring his irritation, she smiled and kept her tone casual. “Ruby? That’s… pretty familiar. Sounds like you two get along well?”
Bailee’s voice stayed calm, like she was just making small talk, but Kayla caught the edge beneath her words. Kayla’s eyes narrowed slightly when she remembered what the private investigator had recently dug up.
Tristian didn’t notice anything wrong. The moment Ruby came up, his whole mood lifted. “Of course we do. Ruby’s not just Dad’s secretary. She’s gorgeous, super capable, and really sweet.
“She handles everything Dad throws at her perfectly, and she’s always looking out for me. She even makes these amazing snacks sometimes. Everyone at the company loves her.”
Bailee’s lashes fluttered, and her face went a shade paler. A bitter smile crossed her lips. “So this Ruby’s that popular with you all, huh? How come you never told me your dad hired such a capable secretary?”
