Another girl sneered, “Can’t agree more. So many people got caught in the rain yesterday, but why the hell is Marianna blaming Kayla just because Davon caught a cold? That’s some serious guilt–tripping.”
Someone echoed, “Exactly. All she’s doing is trying to make herself look like the good guy.”
Another person scoffed, “Gross. She plays that sweet innocent act, but he’s got a sharp mind. She wears a ten- grand dress but can’t afford to call a ride for Davon? She’s not worried about him. She just wants to paint Kayla as some heartless witch.”
A girl shot Marianna a glance and sighed, “We better stay far away from someone like that. One wrong move, and she’ll slap the heartless label on us too. After all, we’re actually rich.”
Another girl nodded. “No joke. Just because the Sexton family is sponsoring her doesn’t mean she gets to boss Kayla around.”
Kayla listened to the growing buzz of gossip around her, and she put on a satisfied smile.
In her past life, she had found out way too late that Marianna hadn’t gotten into their school through grades or scholarships at all. It had been Tristian footing the bill for her.
Marianna kept that fact buried deep. While she soaked up Tristian’s affection and flaunted luxury clothes just like Kayla’s, she still kept up that pitiful act.
She pretended to be some poor but optimistic, hardworking student, claiming she got into the school all by her own efforts and a bit of financial aid.
But now, Kayla was going to shatter Marianna’s perfect mask. She wanted to see how Marianna could keep playing the role of the brave, independent underdog once the truth was out.
Marianna struggled hard to free herself, but Kayla’s grip was like a vice, making it impossible for her to break free.
As the mocking voices around them grew louder, Marianna finally cracked. Her voice came out sharp and shrill. “Kayla, you’ve gone too far. So what if your family is sponsoring me?
“What’s it got to do with you? It’s not your money. Who gave you the right to humiliate me like this? Just because you’re the Sexton heiress, you think you can treat people however you want?”
Kayla let out a cold laugh and let go of Marianna’s wrist. She patted her sleeve, like she was brushing off something dirty.
Kayla scoffed, “Well, well, that’s your true colors, huh? Took you long enough. Don’t you think it’s funny? You’re spending my family’s money and saying it has nothing to do with me?”
The other students burst into laughter.
Someone said, “Is Marianna crazy? Kayla’s literally the Sexton heiress. She’s spending their money and then acts like Kayla has no say? She’s gotta be jealous.”
