Someone else snapped, No kidding. She’s not poor. People like her give the rest of us a bad name. Her aid needs to be revoked.”

Most of the lowincome students had only been accepted to the school because of their stellar grades. Sure, they didn’t quite fit in with the rich students, but they were rarely mocked openly.

In fact, some of the wealthier students would go out of their way to be kind, even offering parttime gigs to help them out.

But now, with Marianna living large while still claiming to be one of them, she was dragging their reputations through the mud. No rich students would want to help the next struggling student if people started thinking they were all like her.

Marianna froze as the whispers hit her ears. She couldn’t hold back anymore. Tears spilled over as she glared at Kayla. Kayla, this is all your fault. Why are you doing this to me?

She thought bitterly, It was Tristian who helped me, not her. What right did Kayla have to expose it? Now everyone’s pointing fingers at me.’

Blinded by rage and humiliation, Marianna raised her hand to slap Kayla.

But Kayla moved fast. She caught Marianna’s wrist and shouted, That’s enough.

Kayla looked down at Marianna and added in an icy tone, You really think you matter? You think you can throw a tantrum and get away with it? Since you’re so sure I ruined you, maybe it’s time you see what I’m actually capable of.

With that, Kayla yanked Marianna’s arm away and slapped her across the face. Marianna stumbled back, lost her balance, and hit the floor. She landed on her backside with a painful thud, her expression twisted in shock and pain.

From the corner of the room, Davon rushed forward, shoving Kayla aside and dropping to help Marianna up.

He shouted, Kayla, what the hell is wrong with you?

He then turned to Marianna, Maria, you alright?

Kayla hadn’t expected the shove. Davon’s hand had landed right on the sore spot on her shoulder where she’d been injured. The sudden jolt sent a wave of pain through her, and she let out a muffled grunt, her face draining of color.

She looked up and saw Davon standing protectively in front of Marianna like a knight in shining armor.

Marianna clung to Davon, burying herself in his arms, her expression flipping instantly into a pictureperfect damselindistress.

She sniffled, her voice trembling just enough to sound fragile, Dav, I just asked Kayla why she didn’t help you yesterday. You got sick because of that, and it’s affecting your studies. I didn’t mean to stir things up, but she humiliated me.
