Marcelo was about to leave for real when Vincent suddenly shot up in a panic, grabbing him by
the arm.
“I’m just venting a little. Why are you being so petty?”
After pulling him back into his seat, Vincent finally started pouring his heart out.
“I really regret breaking off my engagement with Amelia. I never even wanted to get engaged to Gianna in the first place.
“I tried to fight my mom, but I lost. Everything’s just a mess.”
He really did feel awful. He was so overwhelmed that he started gulping the sparkling water on the table.
He never liked to drink alcohol when stressed, so he always came here for a meal, some soup, and sparkling water instead.
Marcelo gave him another mocking look, as if to say, Serves you right.
At least this guy was a little smarter than his two dumb brothers. He could see Gianna wasn’t exactly a catch.
“You slept with Gianna on that cruise and got caught red–handed. Then, you were immediately forced into an engagement by both families. Pretty obvious someone set you up, right?”
Since Vincent was finally seeing things clearly, Marcelo decided to just lay it out.
“How did you know?” Vincent was surprised.
He really had been set up by his own mother!
There was no way his mom pulled this off alone. Gianna must’ve been in on it, too.
He never would’ve thought the sweet, innocent–looking Gianna was such a schemer.
Damn. Why did he have to be the one she targeted?
Why couldn’t she have schemed against Jeremy, breaking him and Amelia up?
Marcelo rolled his eyes. “I’m not stupid.”

Hearing that, Vincent gave him a look of his own.
You’re not stupid, but you’re definitely not a genius either.
“Your foster sister is anything but simple. She’s nowhere near as innocent as she looks.”
Vincent frowned, finally getting serious.

Looking back, he realized every little thing Gianna did around him had been carefully planned.
She always acted weak and innocent in front of the elders and him. There was no way she was as simple as she made herself out to be.
He figured Marcelo and his other brothers had been fooled by her sweet act before, too.
“I really must’ve been blind to think she was a good person,” Vincent muttered, annoyed.
“I even got into fights with Amelia and broke off our engagement because of her.”
He just got angrier the more he thought about it, balling his hands into fists unconsciously.
Seeing Vincent so upset, Marcelo suddenly felt a little better.
At least he wasn’t the only one who’d been duped. Watching Vincent fume over it almost made it funny.
Yeah, it doesn’t sting so much now.
“You should just cut your losses now,” Marcelo advised.
He sounded sympathetic, even though he was mocking Vincent on the inside.
“How? My mom’s determined to tie me to Gianna for good. There’s no cutting losses at this point.”
Even with things falling apart, his mom kept insisting Gianna was perfect.
Marcelo wanted to call him a mama’s boy, but bit back the insult.
Vincent was worse off than he was, and they’d known each other forever. So he decided to show a little mercy.
“Let’s just eat. When you’re full, you won’t feel so bad.”
He picked up the menu and ordered another premium Angus steak.
He figured the premium steak might help heal Vincent’s wounded pride.
