Jonathan had already waited fifteen minutes with no sign of her. Anxiety gnawed through his chest. He’d gone to the hospital, but she wasn’t there either. When her phone still wouldn’t connect, he finally had no choice but to call the police.
Then a faint, broken sob filtered through the smartwatch.
“I… I don’t know… I was taken somewhere strange… there’s a lake, tall grass… it’s on fire… Jonathan, am I going to burn alive?”
The rising heat made Estella’s lungs ache. Smoke clawed at her throat. The dizziness pressed harder and harder. She thought of her mother, alone if she didn’t make it back.
Her voice weakened. “It’s so hot… I can’t keep my eyes open…”
Jonathan’s voice, sharp with desperation, cut through the static.
“Estella, don’t close your eyes. Don’t you dare sleep. I’m coming for you right now!”
Her breaths grew shallow, his words fading from her ears.
“Stay awake. Stay with me!” he shouted, but she was already slipping away.
Jonathan moved fast. He called the local police chief directly, ordering them to triangulate the nearest lakeside fire and dispatch firefighters immediately. Then he rang the head of Bennett Group’s airline subsidiary in Sinovia and demanded a helicopter, no questions asked.
Within five minutes, Jonathan was airborne.
Two retired special forces soldiers sat beside the pilot. Battle–hardened men, they had once served as his security detail. They had never seen him like this face tight, eyes wild with fear.
—
The man they remembered had always been cold, unshakable. Tonight he looked like someone who was about to lose the most precious thing in his world.
At the hospital, Nathaniel hung up his phone. He forced a weary breath and told his assistant, “Call Estella. Find out where she is.”
The earlier threat from a bankrupt rival hadn’t shaken him; he didn’t believe a word. But just in case, he wanted confirmation.
The assistant tried but failed. Both of her old numbers were blocked.

“Mr. Hartwell, Ms. Hayes probably blacklisted me again. I can’t get through.”
Nathaniel waved it off. “If she has the energy to block you, she’s fine.”

Then, dismissive, he added, “That Star Technology scum, Corden – he called just now, ranting. Handle it. Have him locked up for a few days if you can. He needs to learn Nathaniel Hartwell isn’t a punching bag.”
The assistant hesitated. Everyone knew the truth: Nathaniel had exploited a contract loophole to steal Corden’s patent, bankrupting him and wrecking his family. It wasn’t the first time Nathaniel’s ruthless deals had destroyed others. But she kept her doubts to herself.
Estella’s consciousness ebbed and flowed. Heat pressed against her body, flames snapping outside the cave. She thought it was the end – until the thunder of rotors split the sky.
Through the haze of smoke she glimpsed a figure forcing through the fire toward her.
Tears burned her eyes. This has to be a dream. No one would risk this for me.
