Jeremy didn’t hesitate. “The Bennett family isn’t hurting for money. Any losses will come out of my personal account. Whatever Jonathan wants done, do it.”
He didn’t just spoil his wife
–
he spoiled his brother too. Anyone who made Jonathan unhappy
would pay the price.
After hanging up, Jeremy tried calling Madam Rosemary.
She was out shopping, eyeing a gold safety locket for her great–grandson. When her phone rang, she answered without looking at the screen.
“Still alive. Don’t worry.”
And then she hung up.
Jeremy stared at his phone. “…”
Even his grandmother brushed him off.
After picking out gifts for Mia and little Bobby, Madam Rosemary turned to her bodyguard. “Richie, you’ve been shadowing Jonathan a lot lately. What’s he been up to? Who’s he spending time with?”
“Mr. Jonathan’s been buried in work,” Richie replied honestly. “The only person I’ve seen him with regularly is Officer Fawks.”
“Officer Fawks?” Her brows drew together. “Why are they seeing each other so much?”
“Officer Fawks has been asking Mr. Jonathan to take cases for him. Most are domestic violence or child abuse. The firm even started offering legal aid.”
Madam Rosemary’s frown deepened. “Jonathan never used to touch cases like that. And now he’s running legal aid programs? For this Officer Fawks to influence him like that… he must be something.”
The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she became. Her Jonathan had better not be… straying.
That evening, Lana’s birthday brought the three women together. Estella and Selene met her after work to celebrate.
As they stepped out of the office building, a sleek BMW pulled up to the curb.

A tall man in a suit got out, a bouquet of flowers in hand.
Lana recognized him instantly and shot Selene a sharp look. “Isn’t that Greg? Don’t tell me you two got back together. If you’ve lost your mind again, I swear I’ll beat some sense into you.”
Wasting years on that man, even giving up a child for him–Lana had never understood Selene’s blind devotion.
Estella realized for the first time that this was the infamous first love Selene had been tangled with. Handsome, yes—but hardly special. What about him had once made Selene so obsessed?
Selene only sighed. “Relax. My love–sick phase is over. To me, he’s just a stranger now. Let’s go.”
Afraid she might falter, Estella and Lana hurried her along.
Greg had expected her to light up, to run into his arms like before. Instead, she walked past without so much as a glance.
It stung. He had never needed to chase her–she always came to him. He’d even hinted on social media that he was divorcing, and told her directly over the phone. Surely she should’ve taken the bait.
Yet here she was, ignoring him.
Jaw tight, he followed. “Let’s have dinner together.”
Estella and Lana exchanged a wary look, waiting for Selene’s response.
She turned, her gaze like ice. “We’re done. No need to eat together. From now on, act like don’t know me.”
He still didn’t believe her.
They’d broken up plenty of times, but hadn’t they always ended up back together?
