Chapter 198 The Wedding He Never Gave
Finished
Nathaniel watched Jonathan’s back retreating and muttered to his driver, “Am I really not better than him?
The driver quickly replied, “Mr. Hartwell, you’re a dragon among men. How could some small- time lawyer compare?”
In that flattery, Nathaniel clawed back a shred of confidence. “Exactly. What does Jonathan have that I don’t? Estella choosing him over me-how foolish. If she ends up with him, her life will be nothing but disappointment. One day, she’ll regret it.”
He was already waiting for her regret.
Isaac came calling. “So, have you thought more about the engagement with my sister?”
Nathaniel’s grip tightened around his pen before he forced out, “Fine. I agree.”
If Hartwell Group was to survive, he had no choice but to become the Monroe family’s son-in- law.
Isaac sneered openly. “Then act like it. Stop playing around, stop lingering over your ex. If you hurt my sister, the Monroe family will pull every deal we’ve given you.”
Nathaniel swallowed the humiliation. Hartwell Group was a shell of what it once was; Isaac’s contempt was only natural.
“I understand. I’ll treat Isabelle well.”
“See that you do. If not, we’ll cut you off in a heartbeat.”
Every word burned Nathaniel’s pride, but he had no cards left to play. Isabelle was his last lifeline.
At the Monroe estate, Isabelle’s eyes lit up when her brother confirmed the news. “Nathaniel really agreed to marry me?”
Isaac sipped his coffee, unimpressed. “He’s fallen so far he’s barely worth the trouble. Sleeping around, still entangled with his ex-wife, and you want us to spend money and influence to prop him up? Isabelle, you’re wasting yourself.”
He chased women himself, but he never invested this much in any of them. Watching his sister
throw herself away stung more than he expected.
Isabelle pouted. He just made mistakes every man makes And Estella wasn’t blameless either- if she gave him the chance, would he have chased her so desperately? Anyway, I love him. I accept his flaws. Once we’re married, he’ll change.”
Isaac barked out a laugh. “Change? You don’t know men at all. Your so-called true love is just another word for foolishness.”
“Don’t scold me,’ she said, softening her voice. “It’s my only wish. The Monroe family isn’t short of money-can’t you grant me this one thing?”
Isaac waved her off. “I never said you couldn’t marry him. Go ahead. Get it out of your system. When you’re tired of him, divorce. You’re a Monroe. You can afford mistakes. I’ll cover you.”
Isabelle’s smile bloomed. “I knew you loved me best.”
She hurried off to her room and dialed Nathaniel, eager to see him.
Before, he always brushed her off with work as an excuse. Today, though, he agreed.
Her heart raced. “Nathaniel… Isaac said you really want to marry me. Is it true?”
His expression stiffened, but he forced out, “It’s true. I want to start over with you. I’ll be a proper husband.”
Her joy spilled over. “It’s almost New Year’s, so we won’t have time for a wedding, but… we can at least take wedding photos. Will you come with me this weekend?”
Wedding photos.
The words dragged his mind back to Estella. Back then, they’d only registered their marriage. No photos, no wedding, no celebration. He had denied her every ritual, every sign of care.
Now, the thought of wedding portraits with Isabelle left him hollow.
But he only murmured, “Fine. Whatever you want.”
“Then it’s settled! Don’t worry, I’ll handle the wedding planning. You just focus on work.”
“Alright.”
Isabelle ended the call glowing with excitement. She couldn’t contain it-she rang Estella next.
Estella had just stepped out of a meeting when her phone lit up. She hesitated, then answered.
