Benjamin let out a soft sigh. “Ms. Samantha, let’s do this. I’ll schedule you for another full exam. Maybe there’s a small injury that was missed. But based on what I’ve seen, there’s really nothing serious. Try not to stress too much–your emotions can affect your recovery.”
Though clearly dissatisfied, Samantha had no choice but to nod and agree.
Benjamin took her off to arrange the tests, leaving an opening that Conrad was quick to exploit.
He seized the chance to pitch his nanobot clot–busting technology to Lucas, hoping to pull in investment from the Hawthorne Group. Lucas didn’t show the same interest he once had–his attitude was now cool, vague, and noncommittal.

But Conrad mistook it as a sign of hope and started rambling enthusiastically, sensing a potential breakthrough.
By the time Lucas managed to shake him off, Sloane had already left the hospital.
Back at school, Mr. Samson came to find her almost immediately. He gave her a quick once- over and said, “Finally back. Your family didn’t give you any trouble, did they?”
Sloane raised an eyebrow, curious. “Professor, how did you know the Rivers family would try to make things hard for me?”

Mr. Samson adjusted his glasses. “When I went to your house about your paperwork, it was obvious. The way your family treated you—it wasn’t right.”
He paused before continuing, “I was afraid your father might try to lock you up again, so I went to the Rivers main family. Told them about your situation. Hoped they’d realize how talented you are and treat you better.”
Only then did Sloane connect the dots–so the reason Madam Rivers had suddenly shown up to “rescue” her was because of Mr. Samson.
He scratched his head, a little sheepish. “I didn’t make trouble for you, did I?”
“No,” Sloane shook her head. “Thanks to you, I was able to come back to school.”
She wasn’t exaggerating. Marshall had indeed been planning to keep her from returning.
Mr. Samson’s face turned red with anger. “You’re their daughter too. How could they be so blatantly biased? What kind of parents don’t love their own child?”

Sloane had long come to terms with it. Instead, she found herself comforting him. “It’s okay, Professor. I don’t need them anymore. They can give their love to whoever they want.”
But Mr. Samson could see right through her calm tone. It was the kind of strength people develop when they’ve been forced to swallow unfairness for too long. Behind that easygoing attitude were wounds only Sloane herself could understand.
He felt a pang in his chest and muttered, “You’re amazing. One day they’ll regret everything.”
They shifted topics, eventually circling back to the exam paper Sloane had created.
Mr. Samson lit up. “I went through it. The way you structured the difficulty levels, the breadth of knowledge you covered–it’s brilliant. I’ve decided we’re using your version for the exam.”
