Sloane opened the box. Inside was a cake-its shape imperfect, but decorated with care. Across the top, written carefully in chocolate sauce, was her name: “Sloane.”
She lifted her eyes to Lucas’ exhausted yet gentle gaze, frowning. “You didn’t sleep all night?”
Lucas didn’t answer. Instead, he asked softly, “Do you want to try it?”
Sloane scooped up a bite and tasted it. Sweetness melted across her tongue. The flavor might not have been professional, but to her, it was the most delicious dessert she had ever eaten.
“Well?” Lucas looked at her like a student waiting nervously for a teacher’s grade.
Sloane set down the spoon and suddenly reached out, her hand brushing against his weary face. “Lucas.”

His eyes lit instantly, as if stars had fallen into them.
During Sloane’s stay in the hospital, Lucas shuttled constantly between the company and her ward.
The day she was discharged, he had just wrapped up a meeting and was preparing to head to the hospital when his secretary came in to announce Cora’s arrival.
Cora set down her teacup with elegance, a poised smile tugging at her lips. “Mr. Hawthorne, I owe you for this time.”
Lucas glanced at his watch, his tone flat. “Ms. Cora, no need for courtesy; it was mutually beneficial.”
“My sister has already been sent to a sanatorium in Switzerland by our father.” Cora pulled a document from her bag. “Here is the equity transfer agreement she signed. From now on, no one will stand in your way.”
Lucas took the papers and set them aside without much thought. “Your methods are impressive.”
