Sloane smiled, the sharp edge in her eyes fading into something light and relaxed. “No. I just learned.”
Jill stared at her like she was looking at a superhero. “Oh my god, that’s insane!”
It had only been half an hour, and yet Sloane had completely destroyed Samantha and Summer.
Samson and Benjamin looked just as stunned. They, like Jill, had assumed Sloane was pretending to be bad on purpose–playing the long con.
No one had expected her to be this frighteningly quick on the uptake.
Lucas placed a glass of juice in front of Sloane. She looked up at him and said softly, “Thanks.”
Lucas took the seat beside her, legs crossed with easy elegance, one arm resting on the chair while his fingers tapped in a steady rhythm. His other hand lay casually across his lap. Even at rest, he carried the air of someone born to command.
He looked at Sloane with those deep–set eyes, the corner of his mouth curved in a faint, unreadable smile. “Your brother’s been showing up at Stonebridge University a lot lately.”
Sloane blinked, caught off guard. She turned to look at him, thoughts racing. Lucas would never bring something like that up if it didn’t mean something.
Then a flash of Summer’s face crossed her mind–and everything clicked.
Jill had told her that Samantha and Summer had been glued to each other recently.
If Adrian kept coming to campus under the pretense of seeing Samantha… it meant he was also constantly crossing paths with Summer.
Given the Rivers family’s current situation, their real motive was all too clear.
Marshall was desperate to secure a marriage alliance with the Shanks family to save their failing company. But the Shanks family might not consider the Rivers family worthy, which meant Adrian was probably trying to go through Summer directly.
Sloane’s brows furrowed. Her eyes darkened with disgust. The Rivers family really had no shame.
And based on what she’d seen from Summer today, they might actually be succeeding.

She looked up–and met Lucas’s gaze. His eyes were cool, steady, and gleamed with quiet clarity.
There was a flicker of admiration in his gaze. He gave a slight nod, his voice low and tinged with approval. “Seems you’ve figured it out.”
Sloane took a small sip of juice, trying to suppress the nausea rising in her throat.
She raised a brow and looked at Lucas, her tone laced with sarcasm. “The Rivers family really will stoop to anything if it means getting what they want. And judging by Summer’s face today, she’s already fallen for Adrian.”
