“As I thought—it really *was* that bitch Lindsay. For a second there, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.” Zachary’s voice was low and cold. The moment he’d entered the hospital and spotted Lindsay, he’d quietly followed her, keeping his distance.
His gaze lingered on the sign outside Lindsay’s consultation room—emergency hematology. A shadow flickered in his eyes. He leaned in and murmured instructions to the bodyguard at his side.
Without another glance, Zachary turned and headed toward Althea’s hospital room.
Ever since the accident, Althea had been staying here. The hospital’s facilities were top-notch, and with a team of specialists overseeing her rehabilitation, her condition was slowly improving.
“You’re finally back.” The instant she saw Zachary step through the door, Althea could no longer hold back her tears. They rushed down her cheeks as she reached out, desperate for her brother’s embrace.
Zachary hadn’t expected that a short trip abroad would change everything. He’d left for just a little while, and returned to find his beloved sister paralyzed from the waist down.
She had always been so obsessed with her looks—how could someone like her endure a lifetime confined to a hospital bed? It would destroy her.
“Althea.” He crossed the room in a few strides and gathered her trembling body into his arms. Guilt weighed heavy in his voice. “This is all my fault. I should have made better arrangements. I never imagined that leaving you for a few weeks would end like this.”
Althea shook her head, sobbing so hard her voice was hoarse. She snuffled, her tears and snot soaking into Zachary’s shirt.
“No, it’s not on you. It’s that wretched Lindsay—she did this to me. She ruined my life.”
“I won’t let her get away with it,” Althea vowed, her voice trembling with rage. “Even if it’s the last thing I do, I’ll drag her down with me. If my life is over, hers will be too. She’ll pay for this.”
Zachary hurried to calm her, smoothing her hair with gentle hands. “Don’t get worked up. I’m home now, and everyone who hurt you will pay, I swear it.”
He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “I brought back a team of spinal specialists from Europe. They’ve reviewed your case—they’re confident they can help you walk again.”
