As soon as the words left her lips, everyone’s gaze shifted to Mr. Quigley Sr.. Leif tensed, his fists clenching tightly at his sides.

Mr. Quigley raised an eyebrow, looking utterly serious. “A punishment is well deserved. Lindsay is now Yves’ wife, which makes her your elder, Leif. Yet you’ve shown no respect, calling her by name as if she were your peer.”

“Father!”

“Mr. Quigley.”

“Grandpa!”

Joshua’s entire family blurted out in unison, disbelief written all over their faces as they stared wide-eyed at Mr. Quigley.

They were his real grandchildren—how could he possibly take Lindsay’s side?

“I’ve taught you from a young age to respect your elders, but here you are, repeatedly addressing Lindsay by her first name right in front of me, warning and threatening her as you please.” With a wave of his hand, Mr. Quigley issued his verdict. “Go to the chapel and spend the day reflecting on your behavior.”

“Grandpa, I—”

“Go!”

Leif didn’t dare defy his grandfather. Swallowing his pride, he turned and headed to the chapel for his punishment.

One troublemaker down, four more to go.

Seeing his son punished, Joshua was both anxious and upset. “Fine, so Lindsay’s our equal now. But that doesn’t give her the right to go around hitting people! How do you explain that?”

Lindsay didn’t answer him directly. Instead, she shot back, “Suppose I said Helen was cheating on you, sneaking around with another man…”

She didn’t even finish. Joshua’s face turned an ugly shade of green; he leapt to his feet, hand raised to strike Lindsay. But before he could, Lindsay caught his wrist midair.

She shook her head and let out a cold laugh. “See? I only said a few words and you’re already ready to hit me. Maybe you should try seeing things from my perspective.”
