The unexpected visit from Mr. Quigley Sr. caught Lindsay off guard. Still feeling suspicious, she hurried to answer the door.
Mr. Quigley didn’t come in right away. Instead, he craned his neck to peek inside, though from his vantage point he couldn’t see the bed. Lowering his eyes, he asked Lindsay quietly, “Is Yves doing all right tonight?”
“He’s doing well. Why?” Lindsay replied, keeping her tone even.
Yves had only just woken up, and Lindsay wasn’t ready to announce it yet. She worried that if certain people found out, they might try to harm him again. Best to wait until Yves was truly stable before letting anyone know.
Mr. Quigley looked troubled, letting out a weary sigh. “I just suddenly feel uneasy,” he admitted. “I can’t stop worrying about Yves, so I thought I’d come by and check on him.”
“He’s fine. Really, he’s all right.” Maybe it was a father’s intuition, Lindsay thought; the moment Yves woke up, Mr. Quigley seemed to sense it.
“Let me see him, will you? I don’t even know if I’ll get another chance to argue with him in this life.” With that, Mr. Quigley stepped past Lindsay and went straight to the bedside.
Yves lay there, eyes shut, utterly still.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Mr. Quigley reached out and clasped Yves' hand, gazing down at him with aching tenderness. “You used to be so full of life, always picking fights with me,” he murmured. “How about waking up and starting another one?”
Inside, Yves was already arguing back—he couldn’t help himself. As the youngest in the family, he’d always received more of his father’s love and attention than his three older brothers, which had never sat well with them. As the saying goes, the favored child always acts with impunity.
“Look at you now,” Mr. Quigley whispered, his eyes glistening with sudden tears. “You don’t look anything like the ‘Iceman’ people talk about. I’m getting old, and I don’t have much time left. The only thing I can’t let go of is you. If I could, I’d trade my own life just to see you wake up.”
