“I was just joking earlier—don’t take it to heart, okay?”
Lindsay stared at how fast Cheryl could switch faces, and wondered if there was something seriously wrong with her. Or did Cheryl just think she was some kind of fool to be played with?
Lindsay’s expression darkened in an instant, her voice turning icy. “So you think I’m fun to mess with?”
Cheryl’s laughter died the moment she caught Lindsay’s glare. She tensed up, nerves showing on her face.
“I’m sorry! I swear, I was only joking. Please, don’t tell Yves—if he finds out, he’ll kill me.”
“I don’t appreciate jokes like that, and I don’t find them funny. Honestly, it just feels like you’re mocking me.” Lindsay said this out loud, but inside she suspected Cheryl’s so-called joke was just fishing for information.
But what had she even said, really?
Cheryl, convinced Lindsay was genuinely angry, started apologizing over and over. “I’m really sorry, it was my stupid mouth—I’ll smack myself three times to make up for it.”
With that, Cheryl actually raised her hand and slapped herself across the mouth, three crisp smacks.
“If you’re still not satisfied, I can keep going until you are!”
“Forget it, it’s not that serious.” Lindsay waved her off; if Cheryl kept going, Lindsay would seem petty, like she couldn’t even take a joke.
“So, we’re friends now, right?” Cheryl’s warmth returned at lightning speed, and she eagerly invited Lindsay to catch a movie the next day. “It’s the weekend and I’ve got nothing to do anyway—come with me?”
Lindsay did love movies, especially the new releases lately. Cheryl’s invitation was too tempting to resist, and she found herself agreeing before she could talk herself out of it. She couldn’t help but feel a little spineless—wasn’t this woman supposed to be her “love rival”?
Giggling, Cheryl pulled up the list of movies. “So, which one do you want to see?”
Lindsay had a thing for thrillers, the darker and weirder the better—especially if there were ghosts involved.
