Chapter 562 Hand Over All the Ammo

Everyone there had already seen what Theresa could do, so backing her without question felt natural.

Hannah, on the other hand, had some history with her. The moment Theresa reappeared, Hannah’s eyes flickered with something complicated–resentment, hesitation, maybe both. She stayed quiet.

“I’ll go get the rest of the camp,” Steven said, his voice buzzing with excitement.

“No need.” Theresa stopped him. “First, tell me–where did all those old administrators go?”

Steven shook his head. “No clue. We were dumped here, but the higher–ups? Who knows where they got shipped off to? All the folks running this place are new faces.”

That threw off Theresa’s plan to track down Vinny’s mom.

“Theresa, there are a ton of people here, and we’ve got no direct line to management. But according to the guy who’s been stuck here the longest, the admins run this place with an iron grip. Nobody gets close to them. Their ranks climb from CBA all the way up to S–Rank–and S- Rank runs the whole show.”

“Longest? How long has he been around?” Theresa pressed.

“He said he’s pushing a year now. By the time the next selection rolls around, it’ll be exactly a year.”

Exactly a year?

A bold idea suddenly popped into Theresa’s head.

So, these leadership trials happen every year?

After the thought popped into Theresa’s head, she didn’t even get to double–check it with the person who’d been here the longest. The leadership trials had already begun.

A metallic voice boomed across the island. “Today is the day of the leadership trials. All candidates, board the aircraft and head to the testing grounds.”

At once, people started filing toward the waiting helicopters.

The plaza was lined with massive heavy–lift choppers, each big enough to carry two hundred passengers. Eighteen of them sat ready, sufficient to haul every single person off the island.

Everyone fell into line without protest, some practically glowing with confidence–clearly itching for their moment to shine.

Before boarding, each person was handed a gear pack.

Theresa flipped hers open. Inside were a communicator she was required to wear, a parachute, and a gun.

The gun carried a single bullet. Just one. She couldn’t figure out what good that would do.

Still, when she glanced around, everyone except her and Quentin looked thrilled with their weapon, like they’d just been given a golden ticket.

“It’s a handgun!”

“We’ve got a gun now!”

“Don’t get too excited.” A burly man in the crowd cut in. “There’s only one bullet in it.”

“One bullet’s still a lifesaver!”

“Yeah, but I’ve never even touched a gun before. How the hell do you use this thing?”

The whole group broke into chatter, giddy like kids with a new toy, arguing over how to use their miracle weapon.

On the other side of the room, cold and sharp, a heavyset man swept his eyes over them.

“Hand over all the ammo,” he barked. The twenty or so people clustered around him immediately passed him their bullets without a word.

“That’s Patrick Elkins,” Steven leaned close to whisper to Theresa. “He’s their leader. Rumor is he’s got triple abilities–crazy strong.”

The overseers didn’t bother interfering. They acted like they hadn’t seen a thing. With that kind of silent approval, other small groups followed suit, with their leaders demanding bullets from their own people.

Theresa could feel the stares on her. A handful of folks from her camp were still nearby, and how they looked at her said it all. They were worried she’d pull the same stunt, demanding their bullets like the others.

“I’m telling you right now, I’m not joining your crew, and you’re not getting my ammo!” Hannah clutched her gun tighter, shot Theresa a defiant glare, then stormed off.
