Chapter 563 Move
They dropped hard to the ground with a loud thud, practically throwing themselves down as they pledged loyalty to Patrick. They handed over their bullets one by one, swearing themselves under his command.
The others who witnessed it looked on with thinly veiled disgust, but no one dared say a word.
Once Patrick’s men had finished recruiting, several pairs of eyes shifted toward Theresa. Patrick leaned close to one of his lackeys and whispered something in his ear. The guy’s expression lit up like a kid given candy, and he turned toward Theresa with a smirk.
“That woman right there,” he said. “Our leader, Patrick’s his eye on you. All you gotta do is walk over, give him a kiss, and he won’t take your bullets. He’ll let you join under his protection.”
Theresa gave a short, amused laugh at that.
Seated beside her, Steven and Tyler immediately got to their feet. “No way,” they barked in unison. “She’s the leader of our team. We’re not handing her over.”
Their voices rang out, and Patrick’s men stared at Theresa, sizing her up repeatedly. Patrick, broad–shouldered and oozing arrogance, sneered as he gazed over them. The corner of his mouth twisted into a greasy, mocking grin before he finally waved his men back.
One of his lackeys tossed out a parting shot. “Quit acting tough. When your luck runs out, we’ll see you crawling to beg us to take you in.”
Then they sat back down, leaving the air even heavier than before. Everyone else sat stiff with nerves, waiting to see what the next round of this trial would bring.
There were no windows inside the helicopter–nobody knew where they were being taken.
An hour dragged by before a crackling voice came over the loudspeaker.
“All participants, strap on your parachutes. The test begins now.”
The announcement cut off, and the tail hatch of the helicopter clanked open.
A brutal gust tore through the cabin, whipping past the seats and nearly ripping away anyone unlucky enough to sit close to the edge.
Theresa finally saw what they meant by a ‘testing ground!’
A city crawling with the dead.

The skyline of Stratford–the landmark towers of Avalon’s premier metropolis–loomed into view, glittering behind the chaos.
Below them, waves of zombies surged toward the sound of the chopper, swarming in such numbers they blurred into a sea of rotting bodies.
A shriek split the air.
“Raaahhhh!”
“Zombies!”
“Why the hell is it in a city?”
Then the voice returned, cold and mechanical. “For this assessment, all candidates must survive for three days in Stratford. Anyone still alive at the end will be considered the victor. You have three minutes to exit the aircraft. Failure to comply will be deemed a failed assessment—
erasure.”
The announcement faded, and a countdown ticked in.
“Two minutes, fifty–nine seconds.”
Panic rippled through the cabin.
Erasure?
No way!
People were panicking, but one man suddenly stepped forward with guts in the middle of the chaos.
He was the first to leap. His chute snapped open halfway down, and he drifted toward the roof of a nearby building.
The way he handled himself was steady and controlled, and the people could tell he’d had training.
The sight of him jumping lit a fire under the others. One after another, people started throwing themselves out too.
Soon, the sky was full of parachutes blossoming open.
But most of them couldn’t keep a rhythm. Very few managed to land clean. A single mistake meant falling straight into a swarm of the dead.

The opened chutes spread out like giant bed sheets, smothering one swarm of zombies after another–while the people strapped to them were already swallowed up beneath the horde.
Watching people get torn apart froze the rest with fear.
“Let’s move,” Theresa cut in, her voice firm. She’d waited, watched how everyone else fared, and only then made her call.
“Stick with me,” she told them, shouldering her chute. Gripping the tail rail against the roaring wind, her eyes locked onto the vast stretch of the Everbrook River. “All of you know how to swim, right?”
“Yes!” the group shouted back in unison.
“Then hang on to me and head straight for the river!” Without hesitation, Theresa hurled herself out of the helicopter.
