Not only that, but another one was about to get dragged under!

She couldn’t understand that kind of die–together devotion. At least for herself, she would never throw her life away like that. She was about to order the three on the wall to drop back down so they could move when another head appeared over the top–Lilian’s.
“Lilian! Caleb!” the three on the wall cried, rushing to pull her up.
As they dragged her halfway, Theresa noticed Lilian had Caleb clamped between her legs, hauling him up with her. For a fleeting second, Theresa felt something stir inside her.
Maybe this kind of life–and–death loyalty isn’t so stupid after all—not in this frozen apocalypse.
But then Lilian’s grip slipped, and both of them lurched downward. Patrick’s people grabbed at them, their combined weight threatening to drag everyone down into the abyss.
Just as they were about to fall, a hand seized Lilian’s wrist. Theresa, cold–eyed and steady, yanked hard. With a single motion, she tore them free from the others and hauled both Caleb and Lilian over the wall.
The couple stared at her wide–eyed.
“Nine!” Theresa barked, then vaulted down the other side herself. “One second left–move it or stay behind!”
Those still clinging to the top scrambled to jump. By then, the street on both sides had become a wall of zombies pressing in.
“Arghhh-”
“Hurrrk-”
The flood of dead surged forward. Theresa raised her palm and unleashed a burst of fire, burning a path straight through.
Behind her, Patrick, Dorian, and another handful finally made it over the wall, leaving their teammates below to be swallowed by the horde.
The zombies were closing in from every side. Dorian managed to drag a few up, but within moments, both inside and outside the wall were swarming with undead.
“We’ve got to move now!” Patrick shouted. If they stayed any longer, they’d be crushed.

Dorian followed his lead, abandoning the ones still cursing from below. He dove into the fight, forcing his way through zombies in a desperate chase after Theresa.
Up ahead, Theresa was running, but even a hundred meters felt slow.
Up ahead, Theresa was running, but even a hundred meters felt slow.
There were too many. More and more zombies spilled out of every corner, a flood of bodies crashing through the streets. And worse–they were all aberrant zombies, mutated with greater speed, strength, and endurance. Each one moved like an Olympic sprinter, closing in fast.
“Graaaahhh!”
“Raaaghhh!”
They came in relentless waves, snapping at her heels.
Theresa’s flames roared hotter, scorching the mutants that lunged at her. Her Aeroshield flared to full strength as she forced a path straight toward the looming financial building.
Then came the cries. “Help us! Save us!”
Patrick and Dorian’s group had been swallowed by the mob, trapped about 60 feet back. The space between them was only sparsely filled with zombies thanks to the trail she had burned, but they still couldn’t close the distance.
Theresa glanced back with a flat, cold stare–and kept moving. Then it hit her: a mental attack.
“Save us! Or I’ll kill you with my mental ability! Within 160 feet, I call the shots!” Lucinda’s voice rang out.
She was a mental manipulation user, a specialist in mental attack. Within 160 feet, she could shatter someone’s mind like glass.
