“Landon…”
Noelle’s voice trembled with tears as she called out to him, “Would Zinnia only be satisfied if she drove me to my grave?”
The faint smile that had just curled Landon’s lips faded away. He straightened in his seat and finally looked at Zinnia again.
Zinnia felt the weight of his gaze, so she met his eyes, calm and unflinching.
Before Landon could say a word, Zinnia spoke first. “I refuse.”
She guessed that Noelle’s outburst had swayed him, that he was about to urge her to just let it go. But why should she?
Zinnia had always been patient and easygoing, never quick to hold a grudge. But that didn’t mean she was a doormat.
Because of Noelle’s schemes, even her parents had been dragged through the mud online—vilified and insulted for things they’d never done. Her parents had devoted their lives to teaching and research. They’d never abused their positions, never hurt anyone. All they’d ever done was try to live honorably and serve others.
But now, simply because their daughter had made a mistake in love—and because the man she fell for had a manipulative childhood friend—her parents had become targets for a public witch hunt.
For what reason? Zinnia asked herself. She could accept the consequences of her own poor choices, but why should her parents suffer too, all for Landon’s sake?
“Landon, you might have the connections and the means to pressure me into backing down. But if you’re asking me to just sweep this under the rug, that’s never going to happen.”
Her gaze was steady, controlled, the words cool but unwavering.
There wasn’t a trace of anger in her eyes, but Landon still felt a chill from her unyielding stance, as if there was no room for negotiation.
He’d never asked her to agree to some easy truce, but her words made it clear she believed he was about to play peacemaker for Noelle’s sake. That thought made his brow knot in irritation, a flicker of displeasure creasing his face.
