Most of them were either classmates or alumni of Elijah and Jessica—or at the very least, worked in the same field. Naturally, their loyalties lay with the two of them.
And with Rosalie spouting off such shameless, tone-deaf remarks, the room fell into an awkward, heavy silence.
People glanced at her, their expressions a complicated mixture of disbelief and exasperation.
Landon, caught in the middle of it all, could only frown in discomfort. That humiliating sense of being put on display, like some sideshow animal, crept over him, making his skin prickle with shame.
Jessica, to her credit, maintained her poise. She would never stoop to Rosalie’s level, shrieking like a fishwife in public. Still, even she was left speechless by Rosalie’s outburst.
Just then, a deep, commanding huff cut through the air, instantly dousing Rosalie’s bluster.
“If anyone’s to blame, it’s me. I failed as a grandfather—I didn’t raise my grandson properly.”
Zane’s voice was low and grave. Though age had dimmed his eyes, there was no mistaking the authority behind his gaze. He fixed Rosalie with a look as sharp and cold as steel. “Why not just say it’s my fault for being a useless old man, unable to teach my own family?”
As his words echoed in the room, the entire Jensen family went pale.
“Mr. Zane, you’re being far too harsh—how could anyone blame you?” Rosalie stammered, forcing a dry, awkward smile, but she was rooted to the spot by Zane’s icy stare.
Juniper hurried forward, grabbing Rosalie by the arm and tugging her back, then stepping in front of Zane with a string of apologies.
“Mr. Zane, please forgive her—she doesn’t know when to keep her mouth shut. I apologize on her behalf. You’re the bigger person; please don’t hold it against her.”
Zane shot Juniper a cold, sidelong glance but said nothing.
The awkwardness on Juniper’s face was plain to see, but he understood what Zane’s silence meant.
