“Zinnia, Grandpa’s heading out now. When you have a break this weekend, remember to visit the old house and check in on him, alright?”
“Of course, Grandpa. Take care on your way.”
She watched as Zane walked away, then turned her attention back to Landon.
She nodded toward the street. “The subway station’s right over there. It goes straight to Veridian University Hospital, so you really don’t have to go out of your way to drive me.”
With that, she gave Landon a quick wave and made to cross the street toward the station.
But before she could take a single step, Landon’s long arm suddenly blocked her path.
Maybe it was something Zane had said about finding Zinnia a new man—but for whatever reason, Landon’s mood had taken a turn for the worse. He stood there, hands on his hips, frustrated and restless, itching to say so many things but not knowing where to start.
Especially when he caught Zinnia’s calm, indifferent gaze—like none of this had anything to do with her—all the words he’d wanted to say just died on his lips.
Now the frustration inside him was almost boiling over.
He took a deep breath, fighting to keep his temper in check as he looked away.
“So now that Grandpa’s gone, you can’t even be bothered to pretend with me anymore, is that it?”
Zinnia blinked, taken aback. “Excuse me?”
So he’d been sulking all this time just to say that?
Landon could see the exasperation in her eyes, and it only made him more agitated.
Just as Zinnia braced herself, thinking he was about to lose his temper, he suddenly dropped his head and his voice softened. “Did you even notice I barely touched my lunch just now?”
She stared at him, confused. “Weren’t you hungry?”
Landon was silent, jaw clenched. What now? If he gave her a piece of his mind, would that count as domestic abuse? God, she could be infuriating.
He fixed her with a dark look. “Half the dishes were full of things I can’t stand.”
