Noelle’s face went ghostly pale. “Mom, I don’t want to go to the police station.”
But with detectives showing up at the door, there was no room for her to refuse.
“Noelle, just go with the officers for now. I’ll have your father bring Mr. Miller, the family lawyer, to meet you there,” Rosalie said, squeezing Noelle’s hand in reassurance and giving her a meaningful look.
Remembering what her father, Juniper, had told her earlier that day, Noelle managed to steady herself. Under the sharp gaze of the police, she obediently followed them out.
“That spiteful little witch Zinnia—she was never going to let Noelle off that easily,” Rosalie spat after Noelle was taken away, venting her anger in the living room.
Once she’d finished cursing, Rosalie forced herself to calm down and called Juniper to explain the situation. Then she summoned the driver and headed for Enliven Private Hospital, which was owned by the Ford Group.
Meanwhile, in the back seat of the Bentley heading for Veridian University Medical Center, Zinnia ended her call with the police, her face stony and unreadable.
Landon, driving up front, kept glancing at her in the rearview mirror, clearly struggling to say something.
Finally, Zinnia couldn’t take it anymore. She looked straight at him and asked, “Want to know why I called the police on Noelle?”
He hesitated for a couple of seconds, then grunted a soft “yeah.” But his eyes darted away, guilt written all over his face.
“Because she committed a crime. Reporting it is my duty as a citizen,” Zinnia replied, her voice unwavering, every word ringing with conviction. Her back was straight, her tone unapologetic.
Having Noelle post an apology online was only to calm the public, not to let her off the hook. That didn’t mean Noelle could escape legal consequences.
Deep down, though, Zinnia knew that unless Jeremy—the victim—stuck to his story and refused to implicate Noelle, the law might not be able to convict her. But whether or not to call the police was Zinnia’s choice; as for how the court would rule, that was out of her hands.
