Zinnia ignored the sarcasm in Lydia’s voice and simply nodded. “Aunt Lydia.”
The elegant woman in front of her was none other than Zane’s second daughter—Landon’s aunt, Lydia Ford.
“If you ask me, you really don’t have to come every time,” Lydia said, arms folded across her chest. “Always showing up alone, your own husband nowhere to be seen—don’t you find it awkward?”
She let out a sigh, her words laced with faux sympathy. “Landon’s always been strong-willed. No matter how hard you try to please Zane, it’s not going to make Landon settle down. Why bother? Don’t take my words the wrong way—I’m only saying this for your own good. What’s the point of keeping up this one-sided marriage? You’d be better off ending it sooner rather than later.”
To Zinnia’s own surprise, Lydia’s words struck a chord.
She’d heard similar things from Lydia before.
Back then, it just stung—left her feeling exposed and bitter.
But now? The very same words sounded almost pleasant.
Even Lydia’s usual barbs didn’t feel so sharp anymore.
Zinnia smiled and nodded. “You’re right.”
Lydia blinked, clearly not expecting that response.
Usually, whenever she had made these pointed remarks, Zinnia would look embarrassed, wounded.
And yet, Zinnia still showed up every time—whether it was to join Zane for dinner or to play chess with him.
She really did know how to win Zane’s favor.
For a moment, Lydia just stared at her, actually at a loss for words.
A cold, impatient voice cut in from behind them. “Maybe you should focus on Brian’s career for now. Whatever’s between Zinnia and me doesn’t require your concern.”
Landon’s tone was icy, and the irritation was impossible to miss.
The interruption startled Lydia.
“Landon, you’re back too?” she blurted.
